28 Years Later, One Piece Explains Why Only Shanks Could Be the Child of Fate

Please be aware that this article contains spoilers from the One Piece manga. The current Elbaph Arc in One Piece has been showing a lengthy flashback, starting just before Luffy’s crew gets involved in the fight against the Holy Knights, who are attacking the island and holding children captive. While the flashback initially aimed to reveal who killed King Harald over 14 years ago at Aurust Castle, it ended up revealing much more than fans anticipated. The story revealed Harald’s encounter with the famous pirate Rocks D. Xebec, who quickly became a central figure. After detailing Xebec’s secrets and his death at God Valley, the focus has shifted back to Harald’s story.

Following Xebec’s death, he’s desperately trying to gain the World Government’s favor. Chapter 1167 of One Piece shows him joining the Holy Knights and obeying every order, no matter what. In Marijoa, he encounters Shanks, who finally returned to his family years after Gol D. Roger was executed. But this reunion wasn’t a coincidence – it was the result of a carefully laid plan. The chapter once again highlights how Shanks’ choices have shaped the world, a pattern that’s been consistent throughout the story.

One Piece Chapter 1167 Reveals How Shanks Saved Several Crucial Characters

I remember hearing stories about Shanks’ time in Marijoa. Apparently, he was able to slip past all the guards and secretly helped Fisher Tiger break free while he was enslaved by the Celestial Dragons. Before he left, he didn’t stop there – he freed a lot of other slaves too, including Boa Hancock and her sisters, getting them out of that awful place. Those days as a slave clearly left a mark on Fisher Tiger, filling him with intense anger towards humans. But even with all that pain, he went on to become a major figure, working to bring Fish-Men and humans together and try to stop the endless cycle of hatred.

I’ve always been fascinated by Fisher Tiger! He just couldn’t stand the way humans treated Fish-Men, but what really struck me was that he didn’t want future generations to suffer the same fate. For years, we knew his story was key to everything happening on Fish-Man Island, but the real reason he broke out was a mystery… until recently! It’s amazing to see how he became such a legendary pirate, and even more incredible that his dream lives on through Jinbe, who’s now sailing with the Straw Hats! It’s a powerful legacy.

Shanks Has Always Been The One to Change the Fates of Those Around Him

In chapter 1152 of the manga, the story flashes back to Aurust Castle fourteen years earlier, during Harald’s assassination. At the time, Shanks was relaxing in a hot spring on the island with Gaban, completely unaware of the turmoil within the castle walls. The two pirates, reminiscing about their seafaring days, realized it had been ten years since Roger’s execution. Gaban casually noted that Shanks’ curiosity fit with the idea that he was destined for greatness, but Shanks, now retired, just wanted to unwind and avoid complicated subjects.

Gaban’s reference to Luffy as the ‘child of fate‘ is significant, hinting at a role in the story that goes beyond what many viewers initially understand. From the very beginning, Shanks has been a crucial figure, consistently appearing before important events. In fact, he’s the catalyst for the entire story, inspiring Luffy to pursue his dream of becoming Pirate King. Beyond that, Shanks is directly responsible for Luffy obtaining his powerful Devil Fruit.

It’s been revealed that Shanks understood the true nature of Devil Fruits and essentially gambled on Luffy’s potential to change the world. His arrival at Marineford was the turning point of that conflict, ushering in a new age after Whitebeard’s passing. The recent events on Elbaph show that Shanks has been pursuing a significant objective since Roger died – something bigger than just finding the One Piece. As the story progresses, we’re learning more about Shanks, though he remains a complex and enigmatic figure.
