As a huge fan of the ’28 Days Later’ films, I was thrilled when I heard Danny Boyle was returning for another sequel, even if it took 17 years instead of the perfect 28! The movie, now called ‘The Bone Temple’, picks up right after the end of ’28 Weeks Later’, and it’s… well, it’s something else. Jack O’Connell is back, looking totally different – think tracksuits, a blonde bob, and a lot of cheap jewelry – leading a gang that honestly gives off a seriously creepy vibe. They all have ‘Jimmy’ in their names – Sir Jimmy Crystal, Jimmima, Jimmy Jimmy, Jimmy Ink, and so on – which is just unsettling. A new character, Spike, gets caught up with them after escaping the infected, and finds himself in a terrible situation. He’s basically forced to choose between facing the infected alone or joining this incredibly disturbing gang and participating in some truly awful initiation rituals. It’s a wild ride, and definitely not what I expected, but I’m strangely hooked!
In the rural areas, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), who appeared in ’28 Years Later’, resides in a place called The Bone Temple – a structure filled with the skulls of the infected, where he’s managed to stay safe. He isn’t the only familiar face; Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry), the large, infected, and naked leader of wandering groups, also returns. Kelson, covered in iodine, is using his medical expertise to try to control the infected’s violent cannibalism, and he’s starting to see glimmers of Samson’s former self. Kelson’s research might hold the key to a cure, while Sir Jimmy’s actions threaten to further reduce the already dwindling human population.
Alex Garland once again wrote the story, and this new film builds on the previous one. It earns its 18 rating immediately with intensely violent scenes that are initially disturbing and feel almost gleefully sadistic. Director Nia DaCosta, known for her horror work including the Candyman remake, ramps up the gore as the different characters’ paths eventually collide.
Both O’Connell and Fiennes deliver strong performances, and the film features plenty of violent action for horror enthusiasts. The climax is particularly memorable, drawing on Iron Maiden’s song “The Number of the Beast” in a way similar to last year’s “Get Away.” This sets the stage for a concluding film – the third, or actually fifth, installment – in this series.
