28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’s deleted scene released
A deleted scene recently shared with IGN reveals a key moment cut from the theatrical release of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. The scene features a face-to-face encounter between Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal (played by Jack O’Connell) and the Alpha infected character, Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry), which many viewers felt was missing from the film.
When Dr. Kelson continues talking to the unstable cult leader, Crystal quickly runs away as soon as he sees Samson coming. This isn’t just a funny moment; it echoes a scene from the beginning where young Jimmy was desperately trying to escape the initial outbreak. It shows that the villain, despite his frightening appearance and talk of Satan, is still fundamentally a scared child.
Nia DaCosta’s latest film juggles two main threads: we see young Spike getting pulled into the dangerous orbit of Jimmy Crystal and his followers, and simultaneously, Dr. Kelson achieving a breakthrough with Samson, the ‘cured’ Alpha. While these stories do eventually converge, I found myself, and many other critics, wondering why Jimmy and Samson never actually interact throughout the film. It felt like a missed opportunity to really raise the stakes and connect the two sides of the story.
We ultimately removed the scene because it didn’t quite fit with the film’s overall themes and how the plot unfolded. The director wanted to show Jimmy and Samson as representing opposite ideas – what makes something monstrous versus what makes us human. While the scene was fun, it would have weakened that important contrast.
A newly discovered deleted scene is being released alongside 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which becomes available digitally tomorrow, February 17th. You’ll be able to rent or buy the film on various digital platforms. For those who prefer physical copies, a 4K UHD SteelBook, Blu-ray, and DVD will be released on April 21st.
