29 Years Ago, Buffy Changed Everything About the Series With a Surprising Death

Nearly three decades ago, Buffy the Vampire Slayer delivered a surprising twist that fundamentally altered the show’s direction. Creator Joss Whedon adapted his 1992 film into a television series, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers. The story follows Buffy, a teenager who moves to Sunnydale, California, with her mother, Joyce, and continues her destiny as a vampire slayer after being expelled from her previous school for destroying vampires. In the first season, she forms a close-knit group of friends – known as the Scooby Gang – and battles a powerful vampire named the Master.

As a huge fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I remember being completely shocked by the Season 1 finale. We all knew there was a prophecy about a Slayer dying in the final battle with The Master, but nobody thought it would actually happen so soon! The moment he killed Buffy and broke the barrier holding him captive was a game-changer. Seriously, they killed off their main character! It completely flipped the script and redefined what a TV show could do.

Buffy Summers’ Death Changed Buffy the Vampire Slayer Forever

Buffy’s death at the hands of the Master was a huge surprise for viewers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It’s unusual for a show’s main hero to die, and when it happens, it’s typically near the end of the series or as part of a planned shift in storytelling. While Buffy didn’t stay dead, her brief death had a significant impact on the show’s direction. Xander and Angel discovered her body and Xander performed CPR, successfully bringing her back to life – fulfilling the prophecy while still allowing her to defeat the Master, ultimately closing the Hellmouth.

Buffy’s death had a major impact on the show for the next six seasons. It fulfilled a prophecy and also brought about the activation of a new Slayer, Kendra (Bianca Lawson). Introduced in Season 2 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Kendra had a very different upbringing than Buffy – she was abandoned by her parents and trained from childhood to be a Slayer. The two clashed at first, but briefly teamed up before Kendra was ultimately killed by Drusilla (Juliet Landau).

As a huge fan of the Buffyverse, I always found the introduction of Faith fascinating. When Buffy temporarily died at the end of the first season, it wasn’t just a dramatic cliffhanger – it actually caused another Slayer to awaken. That Slayer was Faith, played by Eliza Dushku. She started out as a really compelling antagonist, and eventually became an ally, appearing in both Buffy and Angel. Honestly, she was key to the final battle to close the Hellmouth. It’s wild to think that without that shocking moment in Season 1, Faith’s story – and the whole trajectory of the show – would have been completely different.

Buffy Summers Died More Than Once

Buffy Summers’ first death at the end of Season 1 was a shock, but she was quickly brought back to life by Xander’s CPR, making it a short-lived surprise. Later in the series, Buffy died again, this time in a much more permanent and heartbreaking way. In the Season 5 finale, “The Gift,” Buffy made the ultimate sacrifice, giving her life to save her sister, Dawn, and prevent the destruction of all realities. She jumped into a magical portal, falling to her death. This selfless act ultimately led to her greatest reward: she found peace in Heaven.

Although Buffy’s friends didn’t want to accept her sacrifice, she initially reached Heaven. However, in the Season 6 premiere of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Willow, Xander, Tara, and Anya performed a resurrection spell, calling upon the Egyptian god Osiris, and brought her back to life. Buffy emerged from her grave deeply disturbed, having experienced the peace of Heaven only to be pulled back to continue fighting. This second death, unlike the one in Season 1, was the most heartbreaking moment in the entire series.
