Over its thirty-plus years, the Power Rangers series has changed a lot, and some important moments have naturally been forgotten. This is especially true for a significant shift that happened early on. Not only did this transition launch a new phase for the show 29 years ago, but it also marked the last time a major villain appeared on screen.
Nearly three decades ago, the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series transitioned into Power Rangers Zeo, beginning with a two-part premiere titled A Zeo Beginning. The first part aired on April 20th, 1996, followed by the second part on April 23rd. Zeo continued the stories of many Rangers established in the third season of Mighty Morphin, but it also introduced a significant shift in villains. Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd were replaced by the Machine Empire as the primary antagonists. While Rita and Zedd would eventually return, this marked the last time audiences would see Rita’s loyal assistant, Baboo.
Power Rangers Zeo Was A New Era For The Franchise

The original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was incredibly popular, but many fans forget about Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers, which came right after. That series focuses on the Rangers trying to become adults again after being turned into children. While it’s important for understanding the complete story, Zeo really represents the beginning of the next era for the Power Rangers.
That’s accurate on several levels. Most of the original Mighty Morphin Rangers return, but with switched colors: Tommy becomes the Red Ranger, Adam takes on the role of Green Ranger, and Rocky is now the Blue Ranger. They also have a new power source – the Zeo Crystal – which can only support five Rangers instead of six, causing Billy to retire. Following the destruction of their original Command Center, the Rangers gain a new, more advanced headquarters called the Power Chamber.
The biggest shift happens with the villains. Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd, who had been the main enemies for a long time, are suddenly fleeing as a new threat, the Machine Empire, arrives. Their Moon Palace is under attack, forcing Rita, Zedd, and their crew to escape to Rita’s father’s planet, Gamma Vile. This also marks the last time we see Baboo, though some of the other henchmen will reappear in later seasons of the show.

King Mondo, Queen Machina, and Prince Sprocket are the main villains of the show. This royal family, who lead the Machine Empire, are both incredibly powerful and surprisingly eccentric, and their unique personalities are a key part of the story.
Many factors contributed to Power Rangers Zeo becoming a fan favorite, and it ultimately shaped the future of the series, with later seasons expanding on the ideas it introduced.
