Today marks the 29th anniversary of a particularly beloved episode of The Simpsons. Fans still frequently ask for one of the characters featured in that episode to make a comeback. As The Simpsons approaches its 40th season with FOX, there’s lots of potential for new stories with the familiar characters. However, some one-time characters haven’t been seen since their original appearances, and one of them, in particular, would be a welcome addition to future episodes.
Today marks the 29th anniversary of a classic Simpsons episode, “You Only Move Twice,” which first aired on November 3, 1996. This episode famously introduced Hank Scorpio, voiced by Albert Brooks, a seemingly harmless character who was actually a powerful supervillain. Despite his brief appearance, Scorpio remains a fan favorite, and many viewers hope he’ll return in future episodes.
Hank Scorpio Is Still The Simpsons Best One-Off Character
“You Only Move Twice,” the second episode of The Simpsons’ eighth season, kicked off a noticeably more outlandish season. The story begins with Homer being offered a high-paying job that requires him to move his family to a strange new town. His boss, the charming Hank Scorpio, quickly develops a strong reliance on Homer for a secretive project. As the episode unfolds, the true nature of Scorpio and his work is gradually revealed.
This episode of The Simpsons cleverly unfolds Scorpio’s true plans as Homer gets to know him. The title, a nod to You Only Live Twice, becomes clear when Scorpio is revealed as a classic villain, complete with a James Bond-like counterpart that Homer inadvertently helps defeat. Scorpio’s over-the-top evil becomes fully apparent, but Homer is more concerned with his family’s dissatisfaction. Ultimately, he decides to return to Springfield, and he and Scorpio part ways amicably.
Why Scorpio Should Come Back

The episode ends with Scorpio having conquered the east coast and surprisingly giving Homer ownership of the Denver Broncos, even though Homer roots for the Cowboys. However, Scorpio disappears from the show and isn’t mentioned again. Originally, Scorpio was planned to appear in The Simpsons Movie, but he was later replaced by the character Russ Cargill, voiced by Albert Brooks.
Despite only appearing in a single episode, Scorpio remains a memorable character for the team behind The Simpsons. It’s surprising he hasn’t returned in the show’s thirty-plus year run, as he’s a great character who could easily be brought back with the right storyline.
