Jerry O’Connell thinks he’s the person who killed a major scene from Scream 2.
The 1997 film is the first sequel in the popular Scream series, which is getting its seventh installment in theaters on February 27th. The movie brings back Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, now a college student, and focuses on a new group of friends she’s with who are targeted by a new Ghostface killer – along with her boyfriend, Derek Feldman (played by Jerry O’Connell).
On X (formerly Twitter), podcaster Zack Cherry – different from the actor Zach Cherry of Severance fame – responded to a fan who dislikes the movie Scream 2. Cherry expressed confusion, stating he’s never heard a good reason why anyone would dislike the sequel. He asked those who feel that way to explain their reasoning, saying he’s open to understanding their perspective, even if it’s just a matter of opinion.
Jerry O’Connell shared the post and believes the awkwardness stems from a scene where Derek professes his feelings for Sidney with a public serenade of “I Think I Love You.” He admitted he didn’t take singing lessons and was quite nervous, which likely contributed to the scene’s reception. Many viewers didn’t enjoy the cafeteria/singing scene, and I understand that. I approached it as naturally as possible and didn’t have any vocal training. I was quite nervous during filming, and it likely shows. I’m not a singer by trade, and I own that it didn’t come across perfectly.
Although critics generally loved Scream 2 – it has the highest critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and was the second most successful film in the Scream series financially – fans who used Rotten Tomatoes actually gave it a surprisingly low score. This odd difference in opinion is what led Cherry and O’Connell to discuss the film.

Surprisingly, the “I Think I Love You” scene isn’t what most viewers complain about in Scream 2. When people leave negative reviews and mention specific parts of the movie, they usually focus on two things: the reveal of who the killer is, and the controversial death of Randy Meeks (played by Jamie Kennedy).
Despite having one of the lowest audience scores among the Scream films, Scream 2 has definitely earned its place as a horror classic. It was instrumental in launching a franchise that’s now been running for thirty years.
Beyond its lasting impact, Scream 2 consistently receives favorable reviews from audiences online. It has an average score of 7.3/10 on Metacritic, 3.3/5 on Letterboxd, 6.3/10 on IMDb, and 8.8/10 on Screen Rant’s user review platform.
