2K Games Shutting Down Two Games in 48 Hours

Two games from 2K Games, the company behind popular franchises like Borderlands, NBA 2K, BioShock, WWE 2K, and Mafia, will no longer be playable online starting October 30th – just over 48 hours from today. Fortunately, these games haven’t been available to buy for almost a year, so the shutdown shouldn’t impact many players. The game servers are being taken offline permanently.

Players of The Golf Club 2019 and PGA Tour 2K21 have just a couple of days left to play those games online. 2K Games hasn’t explained why these games are being removed, and that remains the case. The reason could be related to licensing agreements, either because they’ve expired or there were issues with them. Alternatively, with so few people playing these older titles in 2025, it likely doesn’t make financial sense for 2K Games to continue paying for the servers needed to keep them running.

About Each Game

Okay, so I’ve been playing The Golf Club 2019, which came out in 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It’s a pretty solid golf game – most reviews put it between 72 and 80 on Metacritic, though the exact score depends on which platform you’re looking at. It’s actually the third game in what became the PGA Tour 2K series, and it was the first one to get the official PGA Tour license. Interestingly, it was also the last game to use The Golf Club name, so it’s kind of a unique title in the series.

Released in 2020, PGA Tour 2K21 is the sequel to The Golf Club 2019 and is available on the same platforms, with the addition of Google Stadia and Nintendo Switch. It received similar critical scores to its predecessor, ranging from 72 to 78 on Metacritic.

Legacy

Today, you can still play these golf games through PGA Tour 2K23 and the latest version, PGA Tour 2K25 – they’re currently the only golf games made by 2K. The Golf Club VR is still available, but since it wasn’t made by 2K, it’s considered separate. It was originally created by HB Studios before 2K Games took over the development team.

2K Games is shutting down two more of its games in 2025, adding to the closures of WWE 2K23 in January and NFL 2K Playmakers in June. Interestingly, one of their recently released games already has a planned shutdown date. It’s not just 2K, though – many major game publishers are doing this. For example, EA closed a large, well-known game earlier this month.
