It appears that 2K Sports is considering broadening its sports game portfolio by re-entering the college sports scene. As reported by Sports Business Journal, there are indications that the company has been in discussions with sports teams at universities such as Michigan State, Houston, and UCLA regarding a potential revival of the popular College Hoops 2K series.
The report suggests that 2K Sports aims to showcase over a hundred diverse teams, both men’s and women’s, from various American colleges and universities in their upcoming game. These teams will be compensated fairly for their participation, reflecting the market value of their inclusion.
Previously, it was assumed that the company’s college sports basketball game as an additional feature in the MyTeam mode of an NBA 2K game might not succeed. However, a report suggests that if this mode attracts enough players, 2K Sports could create a full-fledged basketball game featuring college athletes instead. As reported by Matt Brown recently, a document indicates that 2K is considering the feasibility of a standalone college basketball game, depending on certain benchmarks for NBA 2K28.
Among these significant achievements, we’re tracking success from DLC sales and forecasts that suggest approximately half of the NBA 2K fanbase might be inclined to purchase a reboot of College Hoops 2K. To clarify, the last game in the College Hoops 2K series was College Hoops 2K8.
2K Sports recently revealed their upcoming main sports title—NBA 2K26—earlier this month. This new game was introduced with a trailer narrated by renowned director Spike Lee, and it’s scheduled to launch on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and the Switch 2 on September 5. An additional option will be the Leave No Doubt Edition, which includes extra in-game items plus early access to the game starting August 29.
In the realm of online multiplayer for NBA 2K26, players on both the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms can engage in cross-platform gameplay. However, it’s unclear at this time which functionalities from the previous console generation will not be included when the game releases across various platforms. As for the Switch 2 version, 2K Sports has yet to clarify whether it will offer the same features as its counterparts on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Further information regarding the diverse gameplay options such as MyTeam, MyCareer, and The W will likely be unveiled as we approach the game’s launch date.
Taking a brief respite from my work to share some insights about the proposal for a college basketball video game expansion pack (an additional content for NBA2K). Here’s a rundown of the schools they intend to feature, their suggested royalties, and other details.
