With so many new fantasy shows available now, it’s easy to forget the great ones from the 1990s. That decade wasn’t just strong for science fiction – it also gave us some fantastic fantasy series. We still remember classics like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and many fondly recall shows like Xena: Warrior Princess, Highlander: The Series, and Gargoyles.
We still talk about many classic fantasy shows, but some lesser-known ones were also really great. While they might not have the same special effects or grand scale as today’s biggest hits, they helped prove how captivating fantasy stories could be, even before shows like Game of Thrones. They’re a lot of fun to revisit, particularly if you remember watching them as a kid.
3) Spellbinder

Though it lasted just one season, the fantasy series Spellbinder stood out for its imaginative story and fresh ideas. The show quickly drew viewers in with its alternate history, imagining a world where the Industrial Revolution never happened, and it was easy to root for Paul as he tried to find his way back home. His strong bond with Riana and their cleverness throughout the story were particularly enjoyable. The challenges they faced were compelling and even offered thought-provoking insights about technology and power that still resonate today. While Spellbinder might not feel groundbreaking now, it was a welcome surprise when it originally aired—and revisiting it offers a fun dose of nostalgia.
2) Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

While many people remember Xena: Warrior Princess, the show it came from, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, is often overlooked. Hercules isn’t totally forgotten, but it still deserves more credit for its creative take on Greek myths and its fun, exciting stories – especially considering the limited special effects available back then. It had all the best parts of a 90s adventure show: humor, action, and characters you couldn’t help but like. It might seem a little cheesy now compared to newer fantasy shows, but it was incredibly enjoyable when it originally aired.
1) Forever Knight

While Buffy the Vampire Slayer is often remembered as the defining vampire show of the 90s, Forever Knight arrived a bit earlier and offered a unique take on the genre. This three-season series, which began in 1992, followed Nick Knight, a vampire who was trying to atone for his past by working as a detective and solving murders. Forever Knight was ahead of its time, blending supernatural elements with the familiar structure of a police procedural, and it remains an enjoyable watch. The show’s complex and conflicted main character was a major draw, and its dark atmosphere and supporting cast are also fondly remembered. Like many shows from that era, it has a certain campy charm, but it’s still a captivating story. It’s a shame it doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.
