2025 was a great year for anime, with many new series gaining popularity. While shows like Solo Leveling and Demon Slayer were huge hits, not every anime resonated with viewers, and a few didn’t quite live up to expectations out of the many that were released.
Most anime flaws come down to weak storytelling or poor adaptations, but a few have sparked real controversy. This year, three anime in particular have caused a stir: a returning favorite with a fourth season, and two others with plots so problematic they’ve reflected poorly on the anime world as a whole.
3) Rent-a-Girlfriend Season 4

Many anime fans have questioned why Rent-a-Girlfriend is still running, especially considering the initial controversy surrounding its release. While the series started with an interesting idea, the fourth season has been its weakest so far. Viewers are frustrated by the lack of development in the relationship between Kazuya and Chizuru and are hoping the story will soon reach a satisfying conclusion.
This season continues the slow and somewhat uninteresting storyline that began at the start of the series. A major point of contention is that it keeps showing Kazuya as unable to act around Chizuru – a problem the story really should have resolved a long time ago. Considering the manga ended badly for Kazuya, the anime is generating a lot of discussion, and it seems this controversial storyline is what’s keeping the series going, as another season has already been announced.
2) Please Put Them On, Takemine-San

For a long time, anime had a reputation for being overly sexualized. Unfortunately, the series Please Put Them On, Takemine-san does little to change that perception, relying heavily on that very stereotype and potentially harming the overall image of anime.
The story centers on a high school boy who accidentally sees the student council president in a compromising situation. As the title implies, the plot is fairly superficial. The student council president, Takemine, possesses a unique ability to rewind time and fix her errors, and she enlists the help of Koushi, the boy who witnessed the incident. Ultimately, the anime relies on awkward and inappropriate scenarios, reinforcing negative stereotypes about the medium rather than offering anything meaningful or positive.
1) The Shiunji Family Children

From the creator of Rent-a-Girlfriend comes The Shiunji Family Children, a series with an even more shocking storyline. It centers around seven siblings – five girls and two boys – from a very rich family. The plot takes a controversial turn when it’s revealed they aren’t biologically related, and some of the sisters begin to fall for their oldest brother.
Sadly, that’s pretty much the whole story, and it leaves viewers questioning the point of it all. The anime is further hampered by its reliance on predictable and often overly sexualized tropes, which don’t add anything interesting. The Shiunji Family Children has one of the most debated plots of the year, and many fans wish it had never been made into an anime.
