Big-budget games have become a major part of modern gaming, but this focus has led to some popular series disappearing for entire console generations. Several well-known franchises haven’t had a new release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or even the recently launched Switch, and with talk of new consoles coming in 2027 or 2028, some of these series might not reappear until gaming technology improves.
As a long-time gamer, I’ve seen a lot of series fade away when we don’t hear from them for a while. But the really big ones? They still get people talking, even after years of silence. We’re all hoping for a brand new game in those franchises, not just another remake or remaster of something we’ve already played. Honestly, the longer we wait, the more worried I get that we might not be getting anything new at all. It’s tough when there’s just no news!
3. Splinter Cell

Man, it feels like forever since a new Splinter Cell game came out! It’s been skipped not one, but two console generations. The last one I played was Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist way back in the Xbox 360 days – 2013! Considering how big Splinter Cell used to be for Ubisoft, alongside Assassin’s Creed, it’s kinda crazy how quiet things have been. I mean, there’s an animated series coming to Netflix in 2025, but I’m not holding my breath for a new game anytime soon. It feels like we might be waiting a long time.
The series is doing well enough to warrant a new game, but Ubisoft’s current focus on Rainbow Six: Siege could get in the way. Siege is heavily supported by the esports community and actually incorporates stealth elements reminiscent of Splinter Cell, all within its fast-paced shooting gameplay. In fact, Sam Fisher, the main character from Splinter Cell, became a playable character in Rainbow Six: Siege back in 2020. This suggests Splinter Cell might be limited to brief appearances in other games, although things could change with the next generation of consoles.
2. BioShock

After the release of BioShock: Infinite in 2013, fans have been waiting for the next installment in the series. There’s been talk of a new BioShock game, potentially a remake of the original or a completely new story in a different setting – often referred to as BioShock 4. However, as of now, there’s no confirmed release date or even much information about a new game.
A new BioShock game is likely on the horizon, and it could be a major title for the next generation of consoles. BioShock games are known for their impressive environments and showcasing the capabilities of the gaming systems they’re released on, so it would make sense for BioShock 4 to be a key feature of a potential PlayStation 6. Although a new installment was announced back in 2019, the game’s lengthy and troubled development by Cloud Chamber Studios might mean it ends up being released on consoles one generation ahead of what was originally expected.
1. The Elder Scrolls

Don’t expect to play The Elder Scrolls 6 until at least 2028 or 2029. Bethesda is planning a huge game that will expand on the massive, immersive open world of Skyrim. While Oblivion Remastered was a welcome return to the world of Tamriel, any major new story content for the series will likely be exclusive to newer platforms and won’t be released on current consoles.
Despite ongoing support for The Elder Scrolls Online with new content, a full Elder Scrolls game hasn’t been released on the latest console generations while Bethesda focuses on the next Skyrim installment. Though Bethesda’s other major series, Fallout, received Fallout 76 in 2018, fans have been waiting a long time for a new Elder Scrolls title. With the somewhat mixed reception to Bethesda’s recent sci-fi game, Starfield, there’s growing concern about what the future holds for The Elder Scrolls franchise.
It’s no surprise many fans are frustrated with The Elder Scrolls 6. It was announced way back in 2018, and with full gameplay still likely a year or two off—and development only recently beginning—it’s almost certain this new Elder Scrolls game won’t be released on the current generation of consoles. Instead, it’s much more likely to be a major game for the next generation of consoles.
