When *Pokemon Legends: Arceus* came out, it was a very different Pokemon game than what people were used to. So, when *Legends: Z-A* was announced, fans naturally wondered what exactly defines a “Pokemon Legends” game. After playing *Legends: Z-A*, it’s clear why it shares the name with *Arceus*. Like its predecessor, this game moves away from the traditional Pokemon formula of battling gym leaders across a large region. However, while *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* and *Legends: Arceus* are similar, *Z-A* is definitely not simply an updated version of the first game.
As a big Pokémon fan, I’ve been really excited about the *Legends* games because they do things so differently! *Legends: Arceus* already felt like a fresh take on the classic *Red and Blue* games, and from what I’ve seen, *Legends: Z-A* is going to be a whole new experience again. To help everyone get ready for the October 16th release, I wanted to share what I think are the three biggest ways *Pokémon Legends: Z-A* will be different from *Pokémon Legends: Arceus*.
3. A Contemporary Setting Offers New Ways to Explore

Pokemon Legends: Arceus was set in the past, letting players use and create older versions of Poke Balls while researching Pokemon to complete an early Pokedex. The new game, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, takes place in a much more modern setting. While trailers showed this, actually exploring Lumiose City really highlighted the change – it not only looks different, but feels like a completely new way to navigate the world.
Lumiose City has a distinctly modern vibe. The elevators and bright lights highlighting different areas, like Wild and Battle Zones, give it a sleek, technological feel. It’s a big contrast to the more classic style of *Pokemon Legends: Arceus*. Exploring Lumiose City truly feels like stepping into a futuristic Pokémon metropolis that’s always bustling, especially with the nightly Battle Royale events.
2. Real-Time Battles Mix Up the Formula Even More

Pokemon Legends: Arceus sparked some debate among players due to its changes to battles. The game let you choose between fast, weaker moves or slower, stronger ones, adding a new strategic element. It also allowed you to catch Pokemon simply by throwing Poke Balls, without battling first. Plus, battles against Noble Pokemon included brief, real-time sections where *you*, as the trainer, had to dodge and move around.
Legends Z-A revives some classic gameplay elements, like sneaking up on Pokémon to catch them without battling. However, the Strong and Agile styles have been removed, and replaced with fast-paced, real-time battles. These battles feel completely different from those in Legends: Arceus, and unlike anything I’ve experienced in other main series Pokémon games. You’ll use the surrounding environment to defend and position yourself, actively moving as a trainer while your Pokémon fight alongside you. The battle system has a completely new flow, and it’s truly impressive.
1. Battles Are the Focus, Not an Afterthought

Many players joke that *Legends: Arceus* didn’t have enough trainer battles, with only a few opportunities to fight other trainers and a greater emphasis on catching and battling wild Pokémon. However, everything I’ve seen of *Legends: Z-A* suggests battles will be a central part of the experience. If you thought there were a lot of battles in the original games leading up to the Elite Four, prepare for even more action in this new installment!
The main difference between these two *Legends* games, to me, is how much they focus on battling. *Legends: Arceus* didn’t emphasize battles as much, which was a welcome change for players who prefer exploring and catching Pokémon over fighting trainers. *Legends: Z-A*, however, seems to be all about battling – and the new real-time battle system will really challenge your reflexes and strategic thinking. Because of this, *Z-A* will feel very different from *Arceus*, though it’s still a fresh experience for the Pokémon series.
