The first season of Netflix’s 3 Body Problem covered a lot of material, but the upcoming second season will need to pack even more into fewer episodes.
According to What’s On Netflix, the upcoming second season of the show – based on Liu Cixin’s famous novels – will have six episodes, which is shorter than the eight episodes in season one.
TopMob has contacted Netflix for further confirmation.
Created by Alexander Woo, DB Weiss, and David Benioff, the series centers on scientists and a detective (Benedict Wong) who must work together to face an enormous danger: an alien invasion by a species called the Santi.

Everyone thought the complex novel couldn’t be made into a TV series, but the show premiered to good reviews, even though it differed from the book in several ways.
The first season concluded with the introduction of the Wallfacers, a team of brilliant minds assembled to protect Earth from the incoming Santi. We can expect to learn much more about their work and the threat of the Santi in the next season.
The upcoming episode will feature new faces, as Claudia Doumit, known from “The Boys,” and Ellie De Lange, who starred in “Wolf Hall,” will be joining the show as Captain Van Rijn and Ayla.
I was reading an interview with Wong, who plays Detective Shi in the new show, and he told TopMob that taking on this project felt pretty daunting. It sounds like everyone knew they had a big challenge ahead of them right from the start.
I began reading the first book and then the second, and I quickly realized it was very complicated. I constantly had to reread chapters because I was getting lost in the story. It made me wonder how they would ever be able to make a movie out of it – it seemed nearly impossible.
Taking on this project felt like a huge challenge, but I was excited to be a part of it. What really made it special was the amazing group of actors I got to work with. According to co-creator Alexander Woo, the team is committed to completing the story and is particularly enthusiastic about the ending, which closely follows the book and brings everything together beautifully. While they anticipate needing more than two seasons to tell the whole story, they aren’t sure yet if it will take three, four, or more.
3 Body Problem season 2 will arrive on Netflix later this year.
