Netflix regularly updates its movie and show selection, and unfortunately, that means some titles are leaving soon. Many viewers have experienced the frustration of finding something they wanted to watch is no longer available. This is especially true for science fiction fans, so here’s a heads-up about what’s disappearing from the platform this month.
Several popular movies are leaving Netflix on December 1st, including a well-loved film by Steven Spielberg, a sequel featuring time travel, and an action movie starring Tom Cruise. Let’s enjoy them over the holiday weekend and appreciate the talented people who made these films!
3) Back to the Future Part II

As a huge fan of the original, I was completely hooked by Back to the Future Part II. It doesn’t even pause for breath – the story picks up right where the first film left off and throws you into a seriously complex time-travel adventure! Basically, Marty McFly and Doc Brown blast forward to 2015 to try and fix things for Marty’s kids, but a simple mistake – a stolen sports almanac – creates a disastrous alternate 1985. Suddenly, Hill Valley is a dark, gritty place ruled by the villainous Biff Tannen, and it’s up to them to set things right.
Building on the science fiction ideas of the original, director Zemeckis explores different timelines and uses fun paradoxes, brilliantly linking the first movie to both an alternate past and a brand new future. Looking back, the hoverboards, automatic shoes, instant pizza, and overall hopeful vision of “2015” are incredibly funny. Don’t miss revisiting this classic sci-fi sequel before it’s too late!
2) E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Steven Spielberg’s classic film, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, tells the story of Elliott, a lonely boy who makes friends with a kind alien lost on Earth. As government officials try to capture E.T., Elliott and his siblings, including a young Drew Barrymore, along with their friends, work together to help the alien contact its home planet. It’s a wonderful movie for the whole family, especially perfect for Thanksgiving, and remains one of the most touching science fiction films ever made.
E.T. beautifully captures the feelings all children experience – fear, curiosity, the importance of friendship, and dealing with loss. With its masterful direction by Steven Spielberg, a memorable story by Melissa Mathison, John Williams’ incredible music, and the amazing creature design by Carlo Rambaldi, the film is full of joy and wonder, making it a perfect watch before it leaves theaters on December 1st.
1) Edge of Tomorrow
Directed by Doug Liman and inspired by Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s novel All You Need Is Kill, Edge of Tomorrow features Tom Cruise as Major William Cage, a public relations officer unexpectedly sent to fight in an alien war. He quickly finds himself caught in a time loop, reliving the same day after dying in battle. With the help of Sergeant Rita Vrataski, played by Emily Blunt, Cage uses this repeating cycle to become a better fighter, understand the enemy, and give humanity a chance to win the war.
Considered a modern classic, Edge of Tomorrow brilliantly combines the fast pace of video games with a compelling science fiction story. It’s a thrilling blockbuster that doesn’t skimp on developing its characters or offering something new. The film fully embraces its time-loop concept, using repetition in a clever and inventive way. Emily Blunt’s character is a particularly memorable sci-fi heroine of the last decade, and the director’s use of real-looking suits adds to the excitement. If you haven’t seen this smart and well-made action movie recently, now’s the time – it’s currently streaming on Netflix.
So, what are you all planning to watch this weekend? I’m always looking for recommendations, and I’d love to hear what you’re thinking! Let’s chat about it over on the ComicBook Forum – come join the discussion!
