The Star Wars sequels divided audiences, but Adam Driver’s portrayal of Kylo Ren was almost universally praised. As the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, Kylo Ren quickly became a standout character in the Skywalker saga. Driver masterfully showed Kylo’s internal struggles, creating a villain who felt both recognizable and new. He played a character who wanted to be as powerful as Darth Vader, but was also drawn to the side of good. Throughout the trilogy, Kylo Ren had a captivating story, especially in the emotionally powerful scenes Driver shared with Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill.
It’s no surprise that Lucasfilm has expanded on Ben Solo’s backstory through other official Star Wars stories, especially in comics like the Legacy of Vader series, where Kylo Ren learned important things about his grandfather. However, Adam Driver is such a talented actor that it would be a shame not to revisit the character on screen. Since Lucasfilm is planning more Star Wars films, there are several possibilities for bringing Driver back if the studio is open to it.
3) A Kylo Ren Prequel That Leads Into Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The sequel trilogy only offers glimpses into Kylo Ren’s past. The most significant look we get is through flashbacks of the incident at Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Temple. A prequel film focusing on Kylo Ren could explore what happened immediately after he turned to the dark side, delving into Ben Solo’s troubled mind as he grapples with his feelings about his family and their perceived failures. This could add depth to his character and even enhance parts of the existing story. Furthermore, it would be interesting to see how the First Order operated internally, especially the developing conflict between Kylo Ren and General Hux.
A prequel focusing on Kylo Ren could give Lucasfilm a chance to finally explore the Knights of Ren, a group that fans were excited about during the sequel trilogy but ultimately played a minor role in The Rise of Skywalker. It would be fantastic to see Kylo interacting with his fellow Knights, creating a compelling team dynamic unlike anything we’ve seen in Star Wars before. Each Knight could have a distinct personality, which would not only enrich the story but also make Ben’s eventual confrontation with them on Exegol even more meaningful.
2) Somehow, Ben Solo Returns in a Rise of Skywalker Sequel

Adam Driver shared that he and director Steven Soderbergh developed a potential Star Wars spinoff called The Hunt for Ben Solo, set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Driver described the script as exceptionally good, and Lucasfilm was enthusiastic about the project. However, Disney ultimately rejected the idea because executives didn’t believe it was plausible for Ben Solo to still be alive after his death in the final movie of the sequel trilogy.
Look, as a critic, I think Disney is making a mistake not revisiting the idea of bringing Kylo Ren back. Let’s be real, characters always come back to life in these big franchises – Star Wars included! – so undoing Ben Solo’s fate in The Rise of Skywalker wouldn’t be shocking. And this isn’t some random idea; Steven Soderbergh is a genuinely gifted filmmaker, and I bet he’s thought through a compelling way to bring the character back that actually works. He’s a truly original voice, exactly the kind of director Disney/Lucasfilm should be courting as they start planning the next wave of Star Wars films. Plus, Adam Driver absolutely killed it with what little screen time Ben Solo got in The Rise of Skywalker. After delivering such a powerful performance, and being reduced to just saying “Ow” after his redemption, Driver deserves a chance to really explore that version of the character in a full movie. It’s a missed opportunity, plain and simple.
1) Ben Solo Force Ghost in the Rey Standalone Movie

A film focusing on Rey is currently the most likely way to see Driver return to the Star Wars universe. A standalone movie, potentially called Star Wars: New Jedi Order, has been in the works for a while, though it’s gone through several writers. Lucasfilm still intends to make the film. Since Mark Hamill doesn’t want to play Luke Skywalker’s ghost again, Ben Solo (Kylo Ren) seems like the most probable character from the Force ghost realm to appear alongside Rey.
As a fan, I’ve been thinking about how they could bring Kylo Ren – or rather, Ben Solo – back, and I think it would be amazing if he appeared as a Force ghost. Usually, it’s an older, wiser mentor guiding their apprentice, but Ben and Rey are more like equals. That would make their interaction really unique! Seeing him offer Rey encouragement as she builds her new Jedi Temple would be so powerful, especially considering what he did to Luke’s. He might not be a seasoned master like Yoda or Luke, but Ben learned a lot through his experiences, and he could genuinely help her. If a Force ghost feels like too much, I’d love to see them explore the Force dyad concept from The Rise of Skywalker again and bring him back through a vision – that was a really cool idea that deserves more attention.
