3 Exciting Additions from the Pokemon Legends: Z-A DLC (Besides New Megas)

Before Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s first downloadable content released, The Pokemon Company mostly hinted at the return of Mega Evolution. We saw a few story snippets and learned about a new feature involving donuts, but it wasn’t entirely clear what the Mega Dimension DLC would offer. Now that I’ve played it, I have a clearer understanding of what it adds to the game. If you’re wondering whether the $29.99 price is justified, I’m here to give you a detailed look at what you can expect.

We anticipated the arrival of Ansha and Hoopa, and our journey to Hyperspace Lumiose. Trailers showed our Pokémon could even exceed Level 100 there, at least for a while. However, like many players, I wasn’t sure if the downloadable content would offer enough new features to be worth the cost. While the promised donuts weren’t much to celebrate, Mega Dimension does introduce some genuinely exciting additions to the original game. Here are the three best new features that make Mega Dimension worth checking out.

3) A New Hyperspace Pokedex with 108 Additional Pokemon to Catch

The recent announcements about Pokemon Legends: Z-A revealed that the game won’t just add a few Pokemon to the existing Pokedex. Instead, it will feature an entirely new Pokedex for players to complete, much like the expansions for Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. The Hyperspace Lumiose area is filled not only with the returning Mega Evolutions, but also with many other popular Pokemon from throughout the series. If you enjoy the challenge of completing a Pokedex, this new DLC, Mega Dimension, is definitely worth checking out.

You’ll mainly find the new Pokémon in special areas called Hyperspace Wild Zones, which you can reach by using Hoopa’s abilities after giving it donuts. As you progress through the game’s story, these Pokémon will also start appearing in Lumiose City. Keep an eye out for them wandering the streets as part of new side quests!

2) New Main & Side Missions with Familiar Favorites

I was initially concerned that the new downloadable content would focus too much on the new characters, Ansha and Korrina, and neglect the friends we’ve already made in the game. I also really enjoyed the characters from the Battle Royale and didn’t want to lose them. Fortunately, the new story missions and side quests do a great job of balancing interactions with both old and new characters. There’s a solid amount of new content, including missions that don’t involve traveling through Hoopa’s portals, which is nice. My worries about a lack of story were unfounded, even though the gameplay in Hyperspace Lumiose can get a little repetitive at times.

The new Side Missions are often found through unique Hyperspace portals and have a quirky feel. However, the Main Missions feature a compelling story that guides you through Lumiose City and other areas. As you progress, you’ll encounter familiar faces from the original game and deepen your connection to Pokémon X and Y.

1) True Double Battles

The most significant addition in Mega Dimension for Pokemon Legends: Z-A is the introduction of proper double battles. In the main game, many scenarios that could have been double battles are instead handled with you fighting one opponent while your partner Pokemon battles another. While battling Rogue Megas does involve another trainer, it’s not a true 2-on-2 fight against two trainers. However, Mega Dimension features several authentic double battles against skilled trainers from the Battle Royale.

Double battles now work much better with the live battle system. A new targeting circle clearly shows which Pokémon you’ve selected, making it easier to follow the action when facing two opponents at once. Plus, the game gives fun, creative names to pairings of familiar characters – it’s a small detail that adds a lot of charm!
