3 Game of Thrones Stories That Would Be a Better Movie Than the Aegon’s Conquest Plan

A movie based on Game of Thrones is moving forward, likely focusing on Aegon’s Conquest. However, there are other stories within the franchise that would make for a better film. With three Game of Thrones shows now available – and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms generating renewed enthusiasm – now is a good time to explore a feature film. George R.R. Martin’s world is expansive enough to support it, much like The Lord of the Rings.

It’s not surprising to see the planned Game of Thrones movie making progress – Beau Willimon, a writer from the show Andor, has been brought on to write the script (according to Deadline). The film will reportedly tell the story of Aegon the Conqueror, the first Targaryen king, and his dragon-led conquest of most of Westeros (with Dorne being the only kingdom to resist). This story is a natural fit for a movie, promising more Targaryen lore, dragons, and exciting battles. However, Warner Bros. might have been better off choosing a different story for their Game of Thrones film, considering how much the current spin-off series already focus on House Targaryen.

3) Robert’s Rebellion

Robert’s Rebellion is the conflict that sets the stage for Game of Thrones, putting Robert Baratheon on the Iron Throne, tasking Ned Stark with secretly raising a Targaryen nephew, and forcing Daenerys and her brother into exile. Because of this, it’s a story that would likely interest both dedicated A Song of Ice and Fire readers and those who simply enjoy Game of Thrones. In fact, it’s already been adapted into a Game of Thrones stage play called The Mad King. However, I believe it would be even more effective as a movie. It has strong ties to the main series, which would attract a large audience, and it’s full of action that would suit the big screen. A film could show us Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark at their peak, and reveal the events that led to Jaime Lannister earning the title ‘Kingslayer.’ There’s a lot of potential, even if it wouldn’t feature many dragons.

2) The Long Night

As a huge fan of Game of Thrones, I always felt the White Walkers, despite being such a massive threat, were a little under-explored. We got a glimpse of where they came from, but I really wanted to know more about the Night King – who was he, and what drove him? The canceled Blood Moon spinoff felt like it could have finally answered those questions, which was a real disappointment. Thankfully, George R.R. Martin’s history, especially the Age of Heroes and the original Long Night, is so compelling. I truly believe those stories deserve to be told on screen, and I think a film focused on the Long Night would be absolutely incredible – visually stunning and just as gripping as anything we’ve seen with the human characters and dragons.

1) Princess Nymeria’s Story

Princess Nymeria of the Rhoynar is a significant figure for characters like Rhaenyra Targaryen and Arya Stark—in fact, Arya named her direwolf after her! Because of this, many fans would love to see her story told on screen. A spin-off series about Nymeria, titled 10,000 Ships, has been planned, focusing on her journey from Essos to Dorne. However, updates on the show have been scarce. Given the scope of her story, particularly the dramatic image of her massive fleet, it might actually work better as a movie. A film could really capture the epic scale of the conflict that led her people to migrate, and I, for one, would definitely want to see it!
