3 Games That Were Broken, Abandoned, or Forgotten Until Modders Saved Them

It’s common for video games to have issues when they first come out. While players used to just accept these flaws, nowadays games frequently receive updates after release. But sometimes, the game creators aren’t the ones to fully resolve these problems, or aren’t the fastest to do so. Often, it’s the modding community that steps in, fixing bugs and adding content that was missing, essentially giving the game a new lease on life. This can be particularly true when developers are slow to address issues or expand upon the original vision.

Many games throughout the years haven’t reached their full potential without help from the modding community. A rocky start can be very damaging – if a game is full of bugs when it first releases, it can be hard to recover. Bad news travels fast, and games with problematic launches, like MindsEye, often face an intense challenge to regain popularity. However, even when developers are still trying to fix issues, passionate mod creators have often stepped in to rescue struggling games. Whether by adding new content or improving the overall experience, these 3 games wouldn’t be as successful as they are today without the contributions of modders.

3. Skyrim

Whether Skyrim is considered flawed is subjective. However, it’s difficult to deny that Bethesda games often have many glitches. Skyrim has fewer critical bugs than earlier games like the original Oblivion, but it still has some issues. Even with these quirks, the game has remained popular over time – and a big reason for that is the huge number of mods available for it.

I enjoy playing Skyrim without any changes, but a lot of players won’t play the classic Bethesda game unless they install mods. There are over 70,000 mods available for Skyrim, and that number keeps growing! This makes it one of the most modded games ever, and these modifications cover everything imaginable. Some mods just make the game easier to use or fix bugs and improve stability. Others add new spells, armor, or even let you play with friends online. While Skyrim is a great game by itself, I believe the dedicated modding community is a huge reason why it remains so popular after all these years.

2. The Sims 4

To be frank, The Sims 4 can be quite buggy, even when it’s running well. While EA’s game is genuinely enjoyable and charming, it frequently experiences glitches. It also lacks the level of detail and realism that some gamers desire, which is why it’s so often modified by players. Actually, a lot of people probably wouldn’t even play The Sims 4 if they didn’t have a large collection of mods.

The team developing The Sims 4 recently shared a plan to address problems that have bothered players for a long time. This shows how frequently the Sims community has been requesting improvements to the core game, instead of asking for more downloadable content that costs extra. While players are thankful for these efforts to fix the game, The Sims 4 has become what it is today mostly thanks to the people who create modifications, or ‘mods,’ for it. Mods, ranging from adding realism with Wicked Whims to giving players more control through MC Command Center, have built upon the basic structure of The Sims 4 and transformed it into something truly special. The game isn’t perfect, but for a lot of players, these mods are what make it enjoyable.

1. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines

Compared to our previous two games, which were at least functional and somewhat fun, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines is different. When it first came out, the game had many problems, causing crashes or preventing players from continuing. For a long time, it was nearly impossible to finish Bloodlines without using modifications created by fans. While some of these issues were eventually fixed, the game probably wouldn’t have gained its dedicated fanbase if those mods hadn’t made it playable in the first place.

Even now, as a big fan, I always tell people to play Bloodlines with at least the Unofficial Patch mod – it’s pretty much essential, honestly. It fixes all the annoying glitches, crashes, and missing sounds that made the original game a bit of a pain to get through. But more importantly, it gets rid of those game-breaking bugs that could stop you from even finishing! And it doesn’t stop there. There are tons of other mods for Bloodlines that really helped it become the cult classic it is today. Some add new Clans from the tabletop RPG, and others even let you… well, feed on other vampires! Seriously, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines is probably the best example of a game that was truly saved by its modding community – they made it playable years before any official patches came out.
