3 Glitches That Actually Made Games Better

Gamers really dislike encountering bugs in their games. It’s frustrating to spend money on a highly anticipated title, only to find it’s riddled with problems and feels unfinished. While most glitches negatively impact the experience, some surprisingly make games better. These helpful glitches are rare, but they can create advantages or exploits that enhance gameplay. We’ve looked back at gaming history and found three glitches that players actually appreciated because of the unexpected benefits they offered.

1) Space Invaders

When Space Invaders first came out in the late 1970s, it rapidly became a defining video game of the 1980s. It’s known for being challenging – players have to fight increasingly faster waves of alien ships that speed up as they approach. Interestingly, this increasing speed wasn’t intentional! Space Invaders was originally programmed for computer hardware that couldn’t handle displaying many objects on the screen at once. This caused the game to start slowly, but as players destroyed aliens and fewer remained, the game sped up. This programming limitation actually became one of the game’s most beloved features.

2) Super Mario Bros.

Despite being a hugely influential and beloved video game, the original Super Mario Bros. has a surprising number of glitches. Areas like the Minus World clearly demonstrate these issues. One of the most famous is the ‘wall jump,’ which is now a common feature in most Mario games. Originally, it wasn’t intentional, but players discovered that by carefully timing a jump against a wall, Mario could climb to higher areas, bypass enemies, and advance. It takes practice to master, but once learned, it’s a really useful glitch to take advantage of.

3) Grand Theft Auto

The Grand Theft Auto series is a massive success, but it had a rocky start. Originally, the game was designed as a simple racing title called Race’n’Chase. However, a programming error almost led to its cancellation. The problem caused police cars to crash aggressively into the player’s vehicle because of faulty navigation. Instead of driving around the player, the police cars would attempt to drive through them, creating intense and chaotic chases. This unexpected behavior ultimately became the foundation of Grand Theft Auto, and a legendary franchise was born – all thanks to a glitch!
