3 Great Books To Read If You Love KPop Demon Hunters

Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters was a huge success – it’s become a real cultural moment! People are loving everything about it, from the energetic story of a K-pop group battling demons to Huntr/x and their catchy music. It’s so popular, a sequel is already being made, and fans (including us!) are eagerly awaiting its release.

We’re really excited for a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, but it’s still a few years off. Luckily, there’s plenty of other entertainment to enjoy in the meantime! We’ve already recommended four anime movies for fans, and now we’re suggesting some great books. You might be surprised to find fantastic fantasy, mystery, and young adult novels that capture the same fun spirit as the Netflix hit. They’re all good reads and offer something similar, even though they’re different.

3) The God and the Gumiho by Sophie Kim

If you enjoy Korean mythology and folklore, Sophie Kim’s The God and the Gumiho is a great choice. The story centers on Kim Hani, who used to be the fearsome nine-tailed fox spirit Scarlet Fox but now works as a barista. One of her customers is Seokga, a mischievous god who’s been banished from heaven and forced to work as a private investigator – a job he despises. When Seokga gets a chance to return to heaven by killing Scarlet Fox, he jumps at the opportunity. However, Hani isn’t willing to go down without a fight, so she proposes a deal: they team up to hunt a powerful demon. This way, she hopes to keep him from discovering her true identity.

This book offers a delightful enemies-to-lovers storyline, which fans of the Rumi and Jinu pairing will especially appreciate. Beyond that, it’s a genuinely fun, witty, and often humorous adventure. Plus, it’s the first in a series, so if you enjoy it, there’s another book waiting for you!

2) K-pop Confidential by Stephan Lee

In K-pop Confidential, Candace Park, a Korean American girl with serious talent, is determined to become a K-pop star. She secretly auditions for a program run by her favorite group and makes the cut as a trainee. As she pursues her dream, Candace quickly learns how challenging the K-pop world can be. Things get even more complicated when she meets a cute fellow trainee, discovers a strict no-dating rule, and finds herself caught up in a potential scandal.

This story is packed with drama and romance, offering a glimpse into the exciting and competitive world of K-pop. If you enjoyed Kpop Demon Hunters, you’ll likely love this too, as it explores similar struggles faced by K-pop idols – with a supernatural twist, of course!

1) The Band by Christina Ma-Kellams

In the novel The Band, Sang Duri is a member of a hugely popular Korean boy band. His career takes a hit when a solo song he releases causes a scandal, leading to his cancellation. To protect his bandmates, Duri disappears and seeks refuge with a Chinese American woman he meets at H-Mart, which creates new challenges. Meanwhile, the band’s producer, Pinocchio, reflects on his past experiences with a girl group that unexpectedly broke up.

Although it’s more intense than KPop Demon Hunters, The Band explores the challenges of fame and the negative aspects of being a celebrity – themes we briefly see in the Netflix film with the popularity of Huntr/x and the Saja Boys. The novel also offers a clever look at the music industry itself and is a truly captivating read that’s worth your time.
