3 Great DC Storylines That the Arrowverse Screwed Up, Including Two Classics

Watching an Arrowverse show with the expectation of adherence to comic book precision is misguided. Shows under the CW’s superhero umbrella march to their own rhythm, offering ample room for spontaneity and alterations. This adaptable approach tends to yield positive results, as original figures like John Diggle and Sara Lance have captivated audiences, frequently outshining established characters. Nevertheless, the Arrowverse occasionally seeks to draw from its roots, such as during annual crossovers that echo popular DC Comics storylines, aiming to honor their predecessors.

In my opinion, one potential hurdle in revisiting something that’s previously been executed skillfully is the pressure and anticipation it brings. Tinkering too much might risk disrupting the harmonious flow. Regrettably, The CW sometimes finds it hard to resist a change when an opportunity arises. Here are three remarkable DC comic storylines that, in my humble view, didn’t quite live up to their potential within the Arrowverse.

3) Crisis on Infinite Earths

In each instance of a crossover event, the Arrowverse strives to surpass its previous efforts. However, “Elseworlds” is relatively subdued compared to most other occurrences. Characters like Oliver Queen and Barry Allen trade places, and they must persuade their friends that something is amiss. Throughout this adventure, there are a few unexpected twists, but nothing on the scale of the previous crossover, “Crisis on Earth-X.” This comparatively moderate scale is intentional, as the series prepares to unveil its grandest narrative yet, titled “Crisis on Infinite Earths.

In the DC comics, various realities unite against the ominous Anti-Monitor, who aims to erase all existence. The Arrowverse mirrors this in their “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” but over time it turns into more of a star-studded gathering than an engaging narrative. Having all characters inhabit one world fails to deliver as they don’t engage in significant interactions following the crossover event. Comics can afford to skip the suspenseful buildup, making their story feel substantial without delay.

2) “Red Death”

The Flash spans nine seasons, introducing almost all famous villains from the Scarlet Speedster’s rogues gallery. Towards its conclusion, it selects Red Death as a new addition. In contrast to the comics where Red Death is an evil counterpart of Batman transformed into a speedster aiming to conquer the multiverse, the Arrowverse must develop an original interpretation.

In Central City, the menacing Red Death makes an appearance, causing chaos alongside a band of nefarious allies. The Flash’s team discerns that this villain is a sinister alternate version of Ryan Wilder, better known as Batwoman. However, attempts to develop a bond between The Flash and Batwoman fall flat, as the essence of Red Death lies in its dark portrayal of Batman, not in a newcomer who has merely begun battling crime while donning a bat suit.

1) Kingdom Come

In the “Kingdom Come” miniseries, we see a grim future for the DC Universe where the distinction between right and wrong becomes blurred. Veteran heroes such as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are once again called into action, this time against allies who have lost their sense of clarity. Introducing that concept to the Arrowverse certainly seems intriguing, but unfortunately, the franchise has yet to make a firm commitment in that direction.

In “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” The CW incorrectly incorporated elements from Brandon Routh’s Superman’s comic book appearance in “Kingdom Come” into the storyline. This event hinted at some key events from the miniseries, but unfortunately didn’t follow through on them. Neglecting to fully explore “Kingdom Come” is likely one of the biggest regrets in the Arrowverse.

The Arrowverse shows are streaming on Netflix.
