Now that *Hades 2* is available, players are eagerly exploring this long-awaited sequel. Similar to the original *Hades*, it’s a roguelike, meaning you’ll need to make many attempts to achieve your ultimate goal. Each playthrough, even if unsuccessful, allows you to collect resources and gain experience to improve your character. The game’s Boon system introduces an element of luck, as the powers you receive each run depend on the offerings of the Gods and Goddesses. However, *Hades 2* also offers ways to have more control over your character’s abilities. One of these is through Keepsakes – powerful items earned by befriending Gods and other characters you encounter during your adventure.
In *Hades 2*, Keepsakes provide helpful benefits, like increasing your chances of receiving blessings from specific gods, healing you, or giving you other advantages. You can only have one equipped at a time, but you’ll eventually be able to change them between attempts. Having a collection of strong Keepsakes is a great strategy. After spending a lot of time trying to defeat Time, I’ve found these Keepsakes to be the most consistently useful, and I recommend unlocking them first when starting a new game.
How to Get Keepsakes in Hades 2 & How to Swap Them Mid-Run
In *Hades 2*, you get Keepsakes by giving Nectar to the gods, goddesses, and other magical characters you encounter. Usually, the first time you give someone Nectar, they’ll reward you with a Keepsake. This means you’ll need to meet certain characters later in the game to get all the Keepsakes. Luckily, many of the best ones are available early on. Make sure to pick paths that give you plenty of Nectar so you can keep gifting people and earning rewards. Once you unlock the Wretched Broker, you can also buy one Nectar each night if you have enough Bones, which is a good way to keep a supply on hand.
Initially, you’ll be stuck with the same Keepsake for the entire night. But later in the game, you’ll learn an Incantation called Kindred Keepsakes that lets you change them. This Incantation unlocks a special Keepsake Cabinet, which will appear near Fountains after you defeat each Guardian. You’ll need 4 Limestone, 2 Moly, and 1 Lotus to cast it. Once you’ve cast the Incantation, you’ll find a Keepsake Cabinet by each Fountain between areas.
Best Keepsakes to Unlock Early & Why
As you play *Hades 2*, you’ll probably find a few Keepsakes you like best. But I think three stand out as particularly useful for most players, and they’re all available fairly early in the game if you know where to look. Before I share my top picks, it’s worth mentioning Nemesis’ Evil Eye – it can be a lifesaver against difficult bosses by boosting your damage against the enemy that last defeated you. Now, let’s get to the three Keepsakes you should really focus on unlocking early on.
3. Schelemeus’ Lucky Tooth
This gives you an extra chance to avoid death, which I really appreciate because I tend to die frequently in games like this. It’s one of the first ways to get this benefit, and the more you use it, the more health it will restore when you come back to life.
Get the Lucky Tooth by giving Nectar to Schelemeus, a skeleton you’ll find in the training area of the Crossroads. You can do this right after you unlock Nectar, making it a great item to choose early in the game.
2. Dora’s Ghost Onion
If you’ve noticed I enjoy finding ways to heal in games like *Hades 2*, you’re right! Your companion, Dora, helps you unlock a vital early-game item called the Ghost Onion. This item automatically restores your health whenever you move to a new area, giving you extra healing. The more you use it, the more health it restores, keeping you stronger as you progress.
You can get the Ghost Onion from Dora by giving her Nectar. She’s usually in Melinoe’s room, so she’s easy to find. This is a simple Keepsake to unlock once you have some Nectar.
1. Selene’s Moon Beam
I’m telling you, Selene’s Hexes are seriously strong in this game. Later on, you can make them even better with her Path of the Stars Boons. I always try to grab her Hexes as early as possible because they do a ton of damage and have extra perks like healing or giving you back magic. That’s why the Moonboom is a must-have when I start a new run – it guarantees you’ll get an offer from Selene quickly and gives you extra points to spend on those first upgrades. It’s a game-changer, honestly.
You can obtain the Moonbeam by using the Gift option when Selene offers you a Boon and you give her Nectar. Getting this offer is random, so you’ll need to be patient. Once you gift her Nectar, she’ll reward you with the Moonbeam. Use the Moonbeam frequently to increase its level and gain bonus points that enhance your Hex. I prefer to start each run with the Moonbeam, planning to replace it later with something like Ghost Onion or Lucky Tooth. This allows me to quickly power up my Hex, then focus on improving my chances of survival as I approach the more difficult boss battles.
