In a refreshing twist, the upcoming Harry Potter television reboot offers an opportunity to explore characters from the books not previously seen in the film adaptations. With the original movie franchise ending less than two decades ago, it has set an exceptionally high standard, generating billions of dollars worldwide and continuing to captivate audiences through merchandise, theme parks, and travel destinations. However, given that this project is being handled by HBO, there’s a sense of hopefulness, as the source material contains ample unexplored territory that the movies-due to their limited scope and runtime compared to a TV series-couldn’t fully delve into, potentially giving it an edge in competition.
The extent to which the remake of the Harry Potter series will vary from the original movies is still uncertain, given that it appears to be a blend of similarities and differences so far. On one hand, it retains some costume and design elements, and Warwick Davis is reprising his role as Professor Flitwick. However, on the other hand, certain casting choices differ significantly from the films, with many adult actors being significantly younger than their film counterparts.
Some new characters will make their screen debut as they were not part of the initial release. Many characters that were previously excluded from the films could potentially appear now, including Ludo Bagman, Frank and Alice Longbottom, as well as the Gaunts. It’s exciting to note that some characters who weren’t featured in the movies have already been confirmed for future appearances, which indicates a promising direction for the storyline.
3) Charlie Weasley
When the Weasley siblings were selected for the Harry Potter remake on HBO Max, they hinted that their eldest brother, Charlie, is currently abroad but will be joining the show later. Since Bill was in the original movies and plays a significant role in The Deathly Hallows due to his wedding with Fleur Delacour and their cottage, it’s likely he was already cast. Mentioning Charlie might be to ensure fans that he won’t be left out of this remake as he was in previous productions.
It’s fantastic news because Charlie is undeniably one of Harry Potter’s most remarkable characters. He trains dragons, served as Gryffindor’s Quidditch captain, and demonstrates immense bravery and loyalty with a similar wit to most of his brothers. Although he hasn’t been cast yet, he should make an appearance in Season 1 if the storyline follows the books since he plays a role in smuggling Hagrid’s dragon, Norbert, out of Hogwarts. However, it might not be until Season 4 that we get to witness him in action as he attends the Quidditch World Cup with his family and later participates in the battle against the Death Eaters who disrupt the festivities.
2) Professor Binns
At Hogwarts, Professor Cuthbert Binns has been as integral as any piece of furniture, having taught there since at least the 1800s and never leaving his post for even death. However, it seems that only Harry Potter’s transition to the big screen could displace him, with the films choosing to overlook both the character and his subject matter. With time and money being valuable resources, it was determined that a ghost teaching a lesson so dull that it lulls students to sleep wasn’t crucial for the storyline.
It’s been verified that HBO has corrected their initial thought and Professor Binns will indeed appear in the Harry Potter television series. The character will be portrayed by British actor Richard Durden, who has previously taken on minor roles ranging from Batman (1989) to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. With this casting decision now confirmed alongside several other recognizable Hogwarts professors, we can anticipate a small role for Binns in the first season of the reboot.
1) Peeves
Similar to Charlie, the role of Peeves the Poltergeist remains uncast officially. In contrast to Charlie, this character appears set to make an appearance in Season 1 of the remake if it adheres closely to the books as suggested. Peeves can be found causing mischief at various points throughout “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”, often adding a touch of humor or chaos. Although these instances are brief, they should not be dismissed as insignificant. The character contributes greatly to the lively atmosphere of Hogwarts, enhancing its vivid presence even without Harry Potter himself.
Fortunately, it’s confirmed that we can expect Peeves to make an appearance in the series since director Mark Mylod and showrunner Francesca Gardiner mentioned, “We’ll get to have some fun with Peeves in the corridors!” If anything has changed, this should still mean we’ll see him at some point on the show. However, casting Peeves for this remake is a difficult task given that the movies had famously reduced his scenes and he was played by British comedy legend Rik Mayall. Nevertheless, it’s hoped that they’ll come up with something impressive to fill those big shoes.
Harry Potter’s remake is currently in production and is expected to air on HBO and HBO Max in 2027.
