3 Horrifyingly Powerful Curses in Harry Potter (That Should Be “Unforgivable”)

While the Unforgivable Curses are famously powerful spells in the Harry Potter universe, they aren’t the only dangerous dark magic. Though love is often considered the strongest magic, the dark arts have repeatedly demonstrated their immense power – and often with terrifying results. The Killing Curse, Avada Kedavra, is the most feared and seemingly impossible to survive, with Harry Potter being the sole exception. However, the Cruciatus and Imperius Curses are also incredibly harmful – unless, of course, the person controlling you with the Imperius Curse wants you to think otherwise.

I’ve been fascinated by the truly dark magic in the world, the stuff that goes way beyond just casting a spell. We still don’t fully understand how Horcruxes are made – we know it involves murder, and some even suggest horrifying acts like cannibalism or self-harm. But when it comes to really potent, dark curses, there are three in particular that I think deserve to be mentioned alongside the Unforgivable Curses – they’re that powerful and terrifying.

3) The Curse On Gaunt’s Ring

This spell’s name and how to cast it are a mystery; Lord Voldemort was the only one ever known to use it, suggesting he invented it himself. What is certain is that it’s incredibly dangerous. Voldemort placed the spell on Marvolo Gaunt’s ring after turning it into a Horcrux, creating a deadly trap for anyone who touched it. Most people would have been instantly killed, but Voldemort hadn’t anticipated Albus Dumbledore’s exceptional magical ability.

Even with their combined skills, the curse proved incredibly potent. It took all the power of Dumbledore, widely considered the greatest wizard of the age, and the considerable expertise of Severus Snape – a master of potions and the dark arts – just to keep it under control. They couldn’t eliminate it completely; it was limited to Dumbledore’s hand, but was still destined to spread and ultimately prove fatal, demonstrating its immense strength.

2) Sectumsempra

Sectumsempra, also called the Laceration Curse, was a dangerous spell invented by Severus Snape, known as the Half-Blood Prince, specifically to harm his enemies. Its effects were revealed when Harry Potter unknowingly cast it on Draco Malfoy. The spell caused deep, slashing wounds as if made by an invisible blade, resulting in severe bleeding and requiring urgent magical treatment.

Sectumsempra is a particularly dangerous curse, famously used by Harry and later Snape, who unintentionally struck George Weasley with it while targeting a Death Eater. The curse caused a severe injury – the loss of George’s ear – that couldn’t be fixed with magic. While a terrible act, it seems Draco Malfoy eventually recovered from the incident, making it somewhat forgivable.

1) Fiendfyre

The curses created by Gaunt and known as Sectumsempra weren’t widely known – only their creator used them until Harry discovered the Half-Blood Prince’s notes. That’s likely why they aren’t considered Unforgivable Curses. Fiendfyre, however, is a much more established and dangerous curse, and should never be used, as it causes extreme and uncontrollable destruction.

This incredibly powerful dark magic creates flames so hot they obliterate nearly everything they touch, and even spawns creatures to hunt down victims. Its destructive force is exceptional – it’s one of the few things capable of destroying a Horcrux, proving just how potent the spell is. As demonstrated by Crabbe (or Goyle in the film adaptation of The Deathly Hallows), it’s extremely unstable and difficult to control, and standard extinguishing charms are ineffective. It’s arguably powerful enough to be classified as an Unforgivable Curse by the Ministry of Magic.

The Harry Potter movies are available to stream on HBO Max.
