3 Iconic Sci-Fi Shows I Still Can’t Believe Were Cancelled in Their Prime

Science fiction has become a staple of television, consistently delivering imaginative and captivating stories. From classic shows to modern hits, sci-fi has always thrived on the small screen. While some franchises, like *Star Trek* and *Doctor Who*, have enjoyed decades of success, many other critically acclaimed and popular sci-fi shows haven’t lasted as long, sadly disappearing after a time.

It’s easy to understand why so many good sci-fi shows disappear – the genre is huge and varied, meaning lots of quality programs get overlooked. When a show doesn’t quickly attract a large audience, it’s often canceled, even if it has potential. The most frustrating cases are when a promising show is cut short while it’s still good. These cancellations feel unfair to fans, and it’s something they often struggle to accept, even long after it happens.

3) The Expanse

(Syfy 2015-2018 & Prime Video 2019-2022)

While several science fiction shows have been revived after cancellation, The Expanse stands out. Based on the novels by James S. A. Corey, the show depicts a future where humans have colonized the solar system and follows a diverse group of people as they uncover a dangerous conspiracy and encounter advanced alien technology that could threaten humanity’s fragile peace.

Although The Expanse was considered one of the best science fiction shows on television, it was canceled after only three seasons. This happened just as the story was gaining momentum, and fans passionately campaigned to save it. Their efforts were successful – Amazon picked up the show, allowing it to continue for three more seasons on Prime Video and reach a satisfying conclusion. Despite this happy ending, the initial cancellation of such a popular show at its peak remains confusing.

2) The OA

(Netflix, 2016-2019)

Created by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, *The OA* quickly gained popularity when it premiered on Netflix. The series centers on Prairie Johnson, a young woman who returns after being missing for seven years. Remarkably, Prairie, who was previously blind, has regained her sight and now goes by the name ‘the OA.’ This sci-fi mystery drama rapidly became a cult hit, earning praise from both viewers and critics.

Netflix is known for canceling shows, even good ones, and the cancellation of *The OA* is a prime example. After only two seasons, the show was cut, despite being originally designed as a five-season story. This left the narrative unfinished and ended on a frustrating cliffhanger. Given its dedicated fans and positive reviews, the decision to cancel *The OA* is still considered one of the most controversial cancellations in recent television history.

1) Firefly

(Fox, 2002)

The sci-fi series *Firefly* started with a fantastic pilot episode, immediately setting it apart with its blend of science fiction and western themes. This unique combination quickly captivated audiences. Sadly, despite its strong start, the show was cancelled after only 14 episodes – a decision widely considered unfair by fans.

It’s particularly frustrating that *Firefly* was cancelled because the sci-fi show holds up remarkably well today. Even after over twenty years, it feels like a show that could have become a classic in the genre. Despite its fresh ideas and dedicated fans, the cancellation stuck, and the franchise never fully recovered – beyond a single movie and some comics, it was cut short unfairly and at its best.
