3 Lesser Known Romantasy Book Series That Deserve As Much Love As Fourth Wing & ACOTAR

Romantasy is incredibly popular right now, and arguably the hottest genre. Books like Fourth Wing and A Court of Thorns and Roses have boosted reading in general and sparked interest in related entertainment. This is because romantasy offers immersive worlds, compelling characters, and captivating stories—often with a touch of romance and excitement—that truly draw readers in.

Although Fourth Wing and A Court of Thorns and Roses are incredibly popular, they’re not the only great romantasy books available. Many other equally enjoyable series are out there, but haven’t gotten as much recognition. Here are a few you definitely need to explore if you’re a fan of the genre.

3) Crescent City by Sarah J. Maas

With how incredibly popular A Court of Thorns and Roses is, it’s easy to overlook Sarah J. Maas’s other books. While Crescent City is also well-known, it doesn’t get nearly as much attention.

The Crescent City series, currently consisting of three books—House of Earth and Blood, House of Sky and Breath, and House of Flame and Shadow—centers around Bryce Quinlan, a half-fae, half-human seeking vengeance for her friends’ deaths in the city of Lunathion. She teams up with Hunt Athalar, a fallen angel, and together they discover a huge conspiracy and a war involving incredibly powerful creatures—from fae and angels to shifters and other magical beings. It’s a sweeping, exciting story that’s definitely worth reading.

2) Kushiel’s Legacy by Jacqueline Carey

Though romantasy feels like a new trend, it’s actually been around for years. Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel’s Legacy series is a prime example, though some might classify it as pure fantasy. The series is quite extensive, consisting of six novels divided into two trilogies—the Phèdre Trilogy and the Imriel Trilogy—with another trilogy following. It all began with Kushiel’s Dart, which was first published in 2001. Basically, there are a lot of books in this series!

This captivating series is set in a France-inspired medieval world and centers around Phèdre no Delaunay, a spy and courtesan who is uniquely sensitive to both pleasure and pain. When she discovers a plot that could destroy her country, the story becomes a thrilling mix of political suspense and romance. It’s a truly fantastic read, but definitely intended for mature audiences.

1) The Bridge Kingdom by Danielle L. Jensen

We’ve mentioned how much we enjoy Danielle L. Jensen’s The Bridge Kingdom series before, and we still think it deserves more recognition. The series currently includes six books: The Bridge Kingdom, The Traitor King, The Inadequate Heir, The Endless War, The Twisted Throne, and The Tempest Blade. The story centers around Lara, a warrior princess who believes King Aren of the Bridge Kingdom is her enemy and is determined to defeat him.

Lara travels to the Bridge Kingdom pretending to be an envoy of peace, but her mission leads her to question her assumptions. Complicating matters, she begins to fall for King Aren. The series has a similar epic feel to Game of Thrones and is truly excellent – it really deserves a wider audience.
