As a huge cinema fan, I was really enjoying the second season of *Peacemaker*. Each week, more and more people tuned in, and the hype just kept building for what James Gunn was creating in the DC Universe. What I loved was how the show kept its funny, quirky vibe, but also managed to be genuinely touching, all while telling a story that connected to a much bigger multiverse. It was getting amazing reviews and building a really dedicated fanbase – it felt like the DC Universe was *finally* heading in the right direction after a long time of being a bit all over the place. But honestly, the finale was a bit of a letdown. It really divided fans, and a lot of us were left feeling frustrated after what had been a universally praised season.
Warning: Spoilers below for Peacemaker Season 2
The biggest problem with the final episode of *Peacemaker* Season 2 is that it feels more like a preview of what’s coming in the DC Universe, especially the *Man of Tomorrow* movie, than a proper ending to the season’s story. Instead of wrapping up the important storylines and character arcs built over eight episodes, the finale focuses on setting up new conflicts and introducing twists that aren’t fully developed. This leaves many plot threads unresolved and makes the season feel unfinished. Ultimately, instead of being a satisfying conclusion, the finale feels like a necessary setup for the next chapter in the franchise.
1) What Happened in Earth X?
Much of *Peacemaker* Season 2 focused on the discovery of Earth X, a frightening alternate reality where the Nazis won World War II. Following the intense battle in the second-to-last episode, the ARGUS organization from Earth X likely knows about the Quantum Unfolding Chamber. This will probably lead them to investigate the technology and the dimension where Peacemaker and his team escaped. Additionally, Chris’s brother, Keith, survived and is now motivated to get revenge on the 11th Street Kids for their father’s death.
Even though the season built up a serious threat involving a Nazi invasion from another dimension and a quest for revenge, the finale surprisingly dropped that storyline completely. It’s also troubling that the heroes, after discovering a world where Black people are enslaved, just ignored the situation. This feels especially strange for a show that usually focuses on its characters’ moral growth, as leaving a world under fascist rule unresolved feels both narratively and ethically incomplete.
2) What’s the Danger in Salvation and What Will Happen to Peacemaker?
Wow, the season two finale of *Peacemaker* really left me hanging! They just forcibly sent Peacemaker, Christopher Smith, to this planet called Salvation – apparently, it’s supposed to be a metahuman prison cooked up by Rick Flag Sr. The last shot is of him totally alone, with these creepy monster sounds all around. As a comics fan, I immediately recognized ‘Salvation’ – it’s a nod to that old storyline where all the villains were shipped off to a planet that turned out to be a training ground for Darkseid’s forces. So yeah, I’m guessing those monsters aren’t just random creatures, they’re probably connected to Darkseid and his Parademons. The really frustrating part? There’s no word on a third season of *Peacemaker* yet, which means what happens next with Chris is totally up in the air. It’s going to have to be addressed in *Man of Tomorrow* or some other DC project, and honestly, they’ve got a lot to unpack with this exile and how it all fits into the bigger DCU story.
3) How Does Checkmate Work, and How Can They Stand Up to ARGUS?
After Rick Flag Sr. and ARGUS began acting like a fascist organization, Sasha Bordeaux teamed up with the 11th Street Kids to create Checkmate – a new, independent spy agency. They said their goal was to oppose ARGUS and help the world, but the end of *Peacemaker* Season 2 didn’t show how they could actually succeed. Checkmate is funded by money stolen from criminals by Vigilante, making it a privately funded operation. This is a big disadvantage when compared to ARGUS, which is a well-funded and powerful government agency. It’s never made clear what Checkmate does, or what power they have, so it’s hard to see how they could stop ARGUS’s plan to send all metahumans to Salvation.
