3 Marvel’s Spider-Man Spin-Offs Insomniac Needs to Make

Over a series of three games, Insomniac has introduced numerous characters in its Spider-Man series, such as Mary Jane, Miles Morales, Sandman, Kraven the Hunter, Harry Osborn, Doctor Octopus, Mister Negative, Norman Osborn, and many more friends and adversaries of Spidey. Before sharing the limelight with Peter Parker in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Miles Morales had even starred in his own spin-off game. Apart from Miles, who has proven himself to be just as worthy a protagonist as Peter, there are several other characters that could potentially lead their own games, spanning from villains to anti-heroes. Here are the top three candidates for a spin-off:

1. Kraven the Hunter – A renowned foe of Spider-Man with an unyielding obsession for hunting the web-slinger, Kraven’s backstory and motivations could be delved into further in a game that explores his complex relationship with Spidey.

2. Doctor Octopus – A former ally turned arch-nemesis, Doc Ock’s transformation is one of the most iconic events in Spider-Man lore. A spin-off could focus on his rise to villainy and the emotional turmoil that led to his metamorphosis into a mechanical monstrosity.

3. Norman Osborn (Green Goblin) – The father of Harry Osborn, Norman is arguably Spidey’s most formidable adversary as the Green Goblin. A spin-off game could delve into his descent into insanity and how he evolved into the menacing foe we know today.

1. Venom

It’s no wonder that Venom has a spot on this list, as Insomniac seemed to be setting up a standalone Venom game by allowing players to play as Venom in Spider-Man 2. The experience was exhilarating, and fans eagerly anticipated more of the character. Given Venom’s role as an anti-hero in Sony’s Spider-Man villain universe and occasionally in comic books, it seems logical that a Venom game would be the most compelling among Insomniac’s Spider-Man villains. With numerous engaging storylines available, such a game would fit well within the universe, especially with any character serving as the host other than Harry Osborn.

As a devoted fan, I must say what truly sets this concept apart is its unique twist on the classic Spider-Man character while still keeping it recognizable. This new version would allow you to not only scale walls and weave webs but also unleash destructive power and leap vast distances across New York City. It’s a fresh take that bridges seamlessly into potential future spin-offs featuring other characters, yet maintains its own identity as a standalone game. If this concept proves successful, it could potentially establish an expansive Insomniac Spider-Man universe, ensuring more thrilling adventures in the Spidey world for years to come.

2. Black Cat

It’s wise for Insomniac to consider reusing Spider-Man villains at such a rapid pace, and Black Cat could be a fantastic character for her own standalone game. Given her knack for thievery, Insomniac might structure games around stealth, a feature that while present, isn’t the main focus in all three Spider-Man series.

This potential game could present an intriguing narrative (similar to the style of Batman: Arkham series, but featuring Black Cat instead). As the story progresses, it might introduce Spider-Man as a non-player character when events spiral out of control, which is a common occurrence for both Felicia Hardy and Peter Parker. Unlike Venom’s games, this one would offer a fresh take, potentially setting it apart, especially if there’s another Venom game in the works. However, given the universe’s constraints, wall-crawling may be limited. Instead, Black Cat could showcase her abilities with her suit, but the main emphasis would shift towards other aspects of the game.

3. Kraven the Hunter

It’s unfortunate that Kraven the Hunter perished in “Spider-Man 2,” as he’s one of the most captivating villains in Spider-Man’s rogues gallery. And it’s even more regrettable that he eliminated several other intriguing villains before his demise. Yet, this opens up an exciting opportunity for a new video game. There aren’t many games that allow you to play as the antagonist. Although Kraven is often portrayed as a noble character, his actions in New York, where he indiscriminately kills people, are anything but noble. This potential game could stand out due to its unique premise and prevent the market from being oversaturated with anti-hero stories.

Insomniac doesn’t have to stop at just that point, though. They could delve even deeper into Kraven’s past, before he arrived in New York. If Sony thinks a film about Kraven’s origin would be successful, then Insomniac, with their proven expertise with Spider-Man characters, definitely could too. They could start by exploring his origins and conclude the story with him hunting villains across New York, thereby creating a genuine spin-off that unfolds concurrently with the main game’s events.
