Video game achievements have a surprisingly long history. It all began in the early 1980s when Activision gave players physical patches for getting high scores in arcade games. Over time, achievements changed, but they didn’t really become popular until the Xbox 360 introduced digital achievements. From there, the idea took off, challenging players with difficult tasks, letting them compete with friends, and rewarding them with points or trophies. While many achievements are enjoyable, some are incredibly hard to unlock. And then there are those that are just silly and pointless – achievements that shouldn’t even exist. Here are three of the worst examples.
1) “Chain Smoker” – The Saboteur

Released in 2009, The Saboteur is an action-adventure game that doesn’t get the attention it deserves, but it’s a solid game with engaging gameplay. Players control Sean Devlin, a race car driver and mechanic who flees to France to avoid trouble with the law. Sean is a dedicated smoker, and this is reflected in the ‘Chain Smoker’ achievement. To unlock it, you need to have Sean smoke 100 cigarettes. You can achieve this by repeatedly pressing the button to light a cigarette – a tedious process – or simply letting the character smoke on his own while idle. Both methods are frustrating and feel pointless, making the achievement more of an annoyance than a challenge.
2) “Remember September ’44” – Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway

One of the most frustrating aspects of the 2008 game Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway is a needlessly difficult achievement. The game, the third in the Brothers in Arms series, puts players in the shoes of soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division during World War II’s Operation Market Garden. The achievement, called “Remember September ‘44,” was meant to honor the troops, but a delayed game release made it almost impossible to earn. It required players to play the game on September 17th, but simply changing the date on your Xbox wouldn’t work – you needed to be online with Xbox Live on that specific date. Because the game launched late, on September 23, 2008, players had to wait a frustrating 359 days until September 17, 2009, to unlock the achievement.
3) “Seriously” – Gears of War

When Gears of War launched on the Xbox 360 in 2006, it was a huge hit for Microsoft and Epic Games. The game’s story, characters, enemies, and world were all captivating, offering a great experience whether playing alone or with others online. However, alongside all its strengths, it also featured one of the most frustrating achievements in gaming history. The achievement, called “Seriously,” wasn’t difficult to understand, but incredibly time-consuming to unlock. It required players to win 10,000 versus matches – a grind so long that it ultimately made the game less enjoyable.
