Adventure games are known for their detailed stories and large worlds filled with many objects. Older games, in particular, sometimes included important items that were easy to miss or throw away. Today, these crucial items are usually clearly marked, but in the past, you might accidentally discard something seemingly unimportant – like a hairbrush – only to find it was essential to progress. Losing these key items could make the game unbeatable, forcing you to start over. Here are three examples of such items, presented randomly.
1) Jar of Green Acid – Space Quest IV: Roger Wilco and the Time Rippers

In Space Quest IV: Roger Wilco and the Time Rippers, many seemingly unimportant items can be easily overlooked. A prime example is a jar of green acid. It’s hard to find because it damages you when you enter a sewer, and the game doesn’t give you any hint that you’ll need it later. If you try to avoid the damage and don’t collect the acid, you’ll find the game impossible to finish. The frustrating part is that you discover it early on, allowing you to progress almost to the end, only to realize you need it to defeat the final boss.
2) The Air Sickness Bag – Leisure Suit Larry 2 – Looking For Love (In Several Wrong Places)

Early in the game Leisure Suit Larry 2 – Looking For Love (In Several Wrong Places), you can find an airsickness bag. It seems pointless at first, just part of the scenery. However, keeping this bag is actually crucial! If you throw it away or ignore it, you won’t be able to finish the game. You’ll need it later to use the elevator and reach the ending.
3) The Paint Remover – Maniac Mansion

Maniac Mansion is a landmark point-and-click adventure game known for a particularly tricky puzzle involving paint remover. Losing the paint remover isn’t the issue – it’s using it on the wrong object first. If you do, you won’t have any left to remove a paint stain on the wall, which reveals a hidden door. This door leads to an area containing a code needed to access the secret lab, meaning you’ll be stuck and unable to progress in the story without it.
