3 Movies From One of the 21st Century’s Best Action Franchises Are Hits on HBO Max (& There’s More To Come)

The 21st century has seen many successful action franchises, but few have resonated as strongly as John Wick. Starting as a straightforward revenge story, the series became a remarkable return for Keanu Reeves, captivating audiences with its unique gunplay and detailed world, which felt similar to those found in comic books. The first film’s success naturally led to several sequels, each performing better than the last. John Wick continues to be a beloved series, influencing both action movies and their fans. It’s no surprise, then, that several John Wick films are now popular choices on streaming platforms.

According to streaming data from FlixPatrol, three John Wick movies are currently among the most popular titles on HBO Max. The first John Wick film is second place, just behind the leading film, One Battle After Another. John Wick: Chapter 2 is fifth, and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is eighth. This strong performance on streaming is a good sign, as Lionsgate plans to continue making John Wick movies.

The John Wick Franchise Has a Bright Future

The John Wick series faced a setback last summer with the disappointing performance of Ballerina, which is estimated to have lost nearly $100 million. However, Lionsgate still has big plans for the franchise. They’re developing another spinoff film focusing on Donnie Yen’s popular character, Caine. Donnie Yen will not only star but also direct the project, and Rina Sawayama, who appeared in John Wick: Chapter 4, is joining the cast. While fans are looking forward to the Caine spinoff, an even larger John Wick movie is also in the works.

Lionsgate announced at CinemaCon last year that a fifth John Wick movie is in the works, with Chad Stahelski directing and Keanu Reeves returning as the lead. This next installment is particularly interesting because, as fans know, John Wick appeared to die at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, seemingly ending his fight against the High Table. This means the filmmakers need a believable reason for his return. Stahelski has hinted that John Wick 5 will only happen if they can develop a truly compelling story, which might be a good thing. While audiences enjoy the action, a forced or unbelievable plot to justify a new sequel would be a letdown.

While the John Wick world is growing with things like a new video game, the movies remain the most popular part of the franchise. Though a sequel to Ballerina is unlikely after its performance, the five John Wick films have earned over $1 billion worldwide with reasonable production costs. It makes sense Lionsgate wants to continue the series and explore new ideas. Both Caine and a potential John Wick 5 could be successful if developed well, so hopefully, we’ll see those projects move forward.

Whether or not we’ll see another John Wick movie may depend on Keanu Reeves’ ability to perform the physically demanding stunts. Reeves is now in his 60s, and the John Wick films have always required a lot from him. He wants any future installments to be designed around his current physical capabilities to ensure he can deliver a believable and exciting performance for fans. It will be interesting to see how the filmmakers approach this. While fans wait for news, they can always revisit the previous John Wick films.
