Halloween isn’t enjoyable for everyone. If you dislike unexpected visitors or are trying to avoid sugar, it can be a really frustrating time of year.
Lots of people will be watching classics like Scream and Hocus Pocus this weekend, but there are also some fantastic movies out there if you want to avoid the Halloween theme altogether. These three films offer different approaches: one cleverly examines Halloween as it exists today, one perfectly captures the autumn season without any Halloween elements, and the last one completely rejects everything Halloween represents.
3. Child’s Play (Prime Video – Nov 1)
Though the 1988 film Child’s Play appears to fit the Halloween vibe, it actually highlights what many dislike about the holiday today. They argue that Halloween has become overly focused on shopping and making money, losing its original, more meaningful spirit.
Child’s Play delivers classic ’80s horror thrills, making it a great choice for Halloween. But it’s more than just scares – the movie also offers a subtle critique of consumerism, which resonates even if you’re just eager for October to be over. The story of Chucky is particularly fitting for this time of year, as it examines how consumerism affects children.
If you love scary dolls, Prime Video is also adding the 2019 remake of Child’s Play, starring Aubrey Plaza and Mark Hamill.
2. Knives Out (Prime Video)
Despite feeling like a classic Halloween movie with its large house, autumn setting, and a mysterious death, Knives Out avoids the typical cheesy scares and predictable horror tropes that often define the season. It has the atmosphere of a Halloween film, but without the unnecessary spookiness.
While Knives Out remains a highly entertaining film, it’s a sophisticated and polished experience rather than a purely lighthearted one. Now that the sequel, Glass Onion, is available on Netflix, and a third movie, Wake Up Dead Man, is coming out soon, it’s a perfect time to revisit the world of detective Benoit Blanc.
Not a fan of Halloween? If you’re stuck celebrating with people in costume this October 31st, Knives Out is a great movie choice that everyone is likely to enjoy.
1. Dr Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas (Peacock – Nov 1)
There’s almost no better way to show you dislike Halloween than by jumping straight into Christmas festivities – and what’s even better is starting with a movie about hating a holiday! While watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas on Halloween weekend is a bold move, it’s also a really enjoyable way to revisit a beloved classic.
This Dr. Seuss story is a great way to lift your spirits if you’re feeling down in the fall, and it’s also surprisingly good at calming energetic kids after all the Halloween candy!
While many classic Christmas movies deserve attention, November is the perfect time to start with How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Save the other favorites like Elf and Home Alone for later in December!
