3 One Piece Characters You Didn’t Know Were at God Valley During the Incident

Warning: This article contains spoilers from the One Piece manga! The God Valley Incident is a hugely important moment in One Piece’s story, and the upcoming Elbaf Arc is set to fully explain what happened on that terrible day. While former Fleet Admiral Sengoku described the incident in Chapter 957, he didn’t mention that the Celestial Dragons organized a cruel game – a Native Hunting Competition – to wipe out the island’s people and unwanted slaves. It wasn’t enough for them to simply kill thousands of innocent people; they turned it into a twisted game, assigning point values to the heads of those they hunted and offering prizes to encourage the participants.

The whole experience was frightening and revealed the true nature of the World Nobles and the high-ranking Marines who defend them. Although Kuma’s past, as shown in the Egghead Incident Arc, only offered a quick look at what happened, the complete story is now unfolding in the current Elbaf Arc. This event was originally planned as a trap for Rocks D. Xebec, but the World Government didn’t expect so many strong individuals to gather on the island. Furthermore, the Elbaf Arc has confirmed that three other important characters were also present during the incident.

3) Shakuyaku

Shakuyaku, the beautiful and powerful former Pirate Empress, was beloved by everyone she met, both allies and enemies. After finding love with Rayleigh, she left the Kuja Pirates and started a bar in Hachinosu. Pirates kept coming to the island hoping to see her, and for a time, everything was calm. Sadly, she was taken captive by the World Government just a year before the God Valley Incident.

I was so upset learning about Shakuyaku’s story! Marlon, one of her crewmates from the Rocks Pirates, really tried to look out for her, but sadly died protecting her during a fight. And can you believe another crew member, Ochoku, turned out to be a traitor? It gets worse – after a year as a prisoner, she was paraded around as the top prize in this awful Native Hunting Competition. The Holy Knights of God were completely obsessed with her beauty and started fighting over who could own her as a slave. Especially Saint Figarland Garling – that monster! He actually killed Shanks’ mother just because he was fixated on Shakuyaku. Thankfully, Rayleigh and the others showed up just in time and saved her from a truly horrible fate!

2) Monkey D. Dragon

When he was 17 and a new recruit in the Marines, Dragon experienced unimaginable horrors and was deeply disturbed by the real character of the World Government. He became a traitor following the Ohara Incident, though we now understand he’d been plotting his rebellion for quite some time. It’s clear that someone who cared so much about innocent lives couldn’t simply stand by and allow the World Nobles to continue their oppressive rule. He struggled to comprehend the justification for crushing people’s lives and what amusement the World Nobles derived from it. However, Dragon realized he was powerless to prevent the tragedy, and any act of defiance would have meant certain doom for his entire platoon.

Dragon’s part in the Incident was extremely important, as he rescued Bartholomew Kuma from a Celestial Dragon, even though it was dangerous. He also encountered Shanks’ mother, who was seriously hurt, and promised to look after her sons. Although Dragon wasn’t able to save Shamrock from Garling, he did manage to help Shanks escape. Shanks eventually joined the Roger Pirates and became a far more admirable person than Shamrock. The God Valley Incident was a key turning point that significantly influenced his future choices and his path to becoming the leader of the Revolutionary Army.

1) Marshal D. Teach

While it’s unexpected to see Shakuyaku and Dragon present, the biggest reveal in the backstory was the truth about Teach’s family. Blackbeard, one of the Yonko, was just two years old when he became involved in a conflict between his father, Rocks D. Xebec, and the World Government. The Marines discovered that Rocks’ wife and son were hiding in his home country and used the Native Hunting Competition as a trap to lure him out.
