
How much a movie or TV show is discussed online is usually a good indicator of its future success, whether in theaters or on streaming services. Generally, if something generates a lot of online buzz, it performs well upon release. This is even more true now with streaming, as content is instantly accessible to subscribers, and online discussions are more common than ever. However, even in the past, when movies primarily debuted in theaters, occasional trailers or teasers could unexpectedly go viral and create a lot of excitement, like the marketing campaign for The Dark Knight.
However, the following films didn’t live up to the success of The Dark Knight. While there was a lot of online hype before their release, suggesting they’d be popular, ticket sales were actually quite low. It seemed like only a small, enthusiastic group of people actually went to see them.
3) The Suicide Squad

David Ayer’s Suicide Squad generated a lot of buzz thanks to a strong marketing campaign. Much of the excitement came from Margot Robbie’s breakout performance as Harley Quinn, and the intrigue surrounding Jared Leto’s secretive portrayal of the Joker.
When the first film was released, audiences initially showed strong support. However, it quickly became one of the most criticized movies in the DC Extended Universe, and deservedly so. There was a lot of excitement leading up to James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, largely focused on the director, but the theatrical response was surprisingly quiet. While its simultaneous release on HBO Max played a role, something else was happening too. The reality was that the DCEU was already losing momentum. Combined with fans feeling disappointed by the first film, The Suicide Squad came and went quickly, despite actually being the strongest movie in the entire series.

2) Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Okay, so Scott Pilgrim vs. the World… it really resonated with people who already loved the graphic novels, which was cool to see. But honestly, the buzz was huge. And as a big fan of Edgar Wright’s work, I was totally hyped too – he’s a genius!
The original material wasn’t widely discussed; instead, a small group of people were very enthusiastic about it. This also applies to Edgar Wright’s fanbase. While he’s critically acclaimed, he hasn’t consistently created mainstream, blockbuster movies beyond Baby Driver. His Three Flavours Cornetto films gained a dedicated following over time due to their quality, unlike The Hangover, which was an immediate commercial success. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World initially underperformed at the box office, but it’s since grown in popularity and become much more well-known.
1) Snakes on a Plane

Before the movie Snakes on a Plane came out, there was a huge amount of online buzz – the premise of a plane filled with snakes and starring Samuel L. Jackson sounded amazing! However, despite all the hype, almost nobody actually went to see it when it was released.
The movie gained attention mostly because of its memorable title and the famous line, “Enough is enough!” However, despite competing with the third weekend of Talladega Nights, it didn’t perform well in theaters.
