3 Overlooked Sci-Fi Movies For Fans Of Alien

The Alien series is experiencing a resurgence. While the original two films are classics, brilliantly combining science fiction and horror, later installments like Alien 3 and the Alien vs. Predator movies haven’t lived up to that standard, often falling into predictable action tropes. Thankfully, these missteps seem to have spurred the creators – including Ridley Scott – to give the Xenomorph to talented, new filmmakers. Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus is a fantastic return to the series’ core elements with fresh ideas, and Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth could be the best addition to the franchise since Aliens.

The biggest drawback of the recent success with Alien is the wait for more content. While a sequel to Romulus is planned and Earth has been renewed for another season, it will take some time before these projects are released, as a rushed production would likely be unsuccessful. Here are three lesser-known sci-fi films for Alien fans to enjoy in the meantime.

3) Life

The Alien films are known for their strong casts, featuring stars like Sigourney Weaver, Michael Fassbender, and Isabela Merced. The sci-fi thriller Life continues this tradition, bringing together Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Rebecca Ferguson as a space crew who encounter an unusual life form. They soon discover their new visitor is far more dangerous than they initially thought, leading to some truly frightening moments. Although Life isn’t connected to the Venom storyline as some anticipated, it’s still a worthwhile watch, particularly for those who enjoy the films of Ridley Scott.

2) Attack the Block

Ripley is a serious character, focused on survival rather than humor. It’s a different approach than the one taken in the sci-fi comedy Attack the Block, where things are a bit lighter. This British film starts with a meteor crashing to Earth during a holiday, releasing an alien invasion. A local street gang unexpectedly steps up to defend the planet, and they adapt to the challenge surprisingly well. While it’s funny, Attack the Block doesn’t shy away from violence and has plenty of intense moments.

1) Annihilation

One of the most enjoyable aspects of the Alien series is learning about the Xenomorph and where it came from. While Prometheus and its sequels explore this quite a bit, some mysteries remain. The Netflix film Annihilation also deals with complex questions, and its plot can be challenging to follow. Essentially, it’s about a team of scientists who venture into a bizarre area on Earth where the environment dramatically changes all life forms.
