A good plot twist can make a sci-fi show amazing, but these recent reveals were far too predictable to be shocking. Even well-made shows sometimes fall into the trap of using tired, overused twists. It’s similar to a great movie with a disappointing, foreseeable ending – shows can sometimes hint at major plot points too early, diminishing their impact. This doesn’t necessarily ruin the entire series, but it can definitely leave viewers feeling unsatisfied with those particular storylines.
Popular sci-fi shows like Black Mirror, Westworld, and Stranger Things often rely on plot twists, but some of these were fairly obvious. While these twists didn’t necessarily damage the shows’ overall quality, they did make the stories feel a bit predictable for viewers who are familiar with the science fiction genre, and left some wishing the shows had been more surprising.
Black Mirror

The TV series Black Mirror is known for its shocking and unsettling endings, and its early seasons were particularly notorious for being far more disturbing than those of the classic show The Outer Limits. After episodes like “White Bear” and “White Christmas” left viewers deeply upset, the show’s creators knew they had to raise the stakes when it moved to Netflix in 2016. While episode 4, “Shut Up and Dance,” delivered a particularly brutal twist, the episode before it wasn’t quite as impactful.
The second episode, “Playtest,” features Cooper, played by Wyatt Russell, trying out a cutting-edge virtual reality game. This game is designed to tap into a player’s deepest fears and manifest them within the simulation. What follows is a disturbing and surreal experience as Cooper is forced to confront his worst anxieties. The episode leaves you wondering if any of it truly matters, and if the entire ordeal is just a dying man’s dream. The ending, while bleak, isn’t much of a surprise.
Westworld

Inspired by the Michael Crichton novel and a 1973 film, the HBO series Westworld takes place in a high-tech Wild West theme park. In this park, lifelike androids called “Hosts” allow visitors, known as “Guests,” to indulge their darkest desires. The show is known for its complex, non-linear storytelling, jumping between different time periods and revealing surprising twists as the story unfolds.
While Westworld is known for its surprising twists, not all of them land perfectly. The character of William, played by Jimmi Simpson, starts as a genuinely kind guest—one of the few who questions the way the androids are treated. Because of this, it would have been a bold move if he later turned out to be the ruthless Man in Black, portrayed by Ed Harris, a frequent park visitor obsessed with its mysteries. The show took a while to reveal this connection, but many viewers figured it out much earlier.
Stranger Things

The third season of Stranger Things felt noticeably different, becoming much more comedic and exaggerated than before. While there are enjoyable parts, like Dacre Montgomery’s performance as the villain Billy, it lacked the nuance and emotional depth of the first two seasons. This change was particularly evident in the character of Sheriff Hopper, played by David Harbour. In the first season, Hopper was a heartbroken father drawn into a dangerous mystery, genuinely fearing for his life.
By season three, Hopper had become a character who felt like a classic sitcom dad mixed with an action hero from the 1980s—he was better at fighting enemies with guns than at connecting with his adopted daughter. This change made him seem rude and overbearing, and it was clear the show was building towards a dramatic, sacrificial moment for him. However, it was also obvious that Stranger Things wouldn’t actually kill off such a central character after only three seasons, so his return in season four wasn’t a surprise at all—it felt completely predictable.
