Warner Bros. revealed in April 2024 that they were developing a fifth Matrix movie, based on an idea pitched by writer and director Drew Goddard. However, there’s been very little news about the project in the year and a half since. Goddard has stated he’s still working on the script, but hasn’t shared any details about the story. This is concerning because the last attempt to restart The Matrix series wasn’t well-received by fans, making this new film a potentially risky venture.
After a long wait, The Matrix series returned in 2021 with The Matrix Resurrections. Directed by Lana Wachowski, the film sparked a lot of debate among fans and critics. Surprisingly, Resurrections offered a commentary on the franchise itself and how Warner Bros. handled it, while still including the familiar references and Easter eggs that fans love. Despite receiving mixed reviews, a fifth Matrix film is in development, and three current fan theories about its plot are considered more compelling than the story presented in Resurrections.
The Matrix 5 Won’t Have Neo As Its Protagonist

I love Keanu Reeves, and he’s amazing as Neo, but honestly, I think The Matrix 5 should explore a story beyond his character. We’ve had four films focused on Neo, and while it’s been incredible, I’m really hoping the new movie will branch out. The Matrix universe is so rich with interesting characters, and I’d be so much more excited to see a story centered around someone new instead of revisiting Neo’s journey again.
Bringing in a new lead character would let The Matrix truly move forward, avoiding the limitations that held back Resurrections. The best path for the franchise is to tell a fresh story with new faces, essentially rebooting it rather than relying on nostalgia. Keanu Reeves could make appearances as Neo, but the focus should be on a new protagonist.
The Matrix Will Have A New “The One”

Following the ideas from the previous discussion, if Keanu Reeves doesn’t return for The Matrix 5, the film will likely need to introduce a new character as “The One.” Neo has always been the central figure of The Matrix trilogy because of his role as The One. However, many fans believe Neo isn’t the only One, and the story’s history supports this. The Architect and Oracle have both hinted that each new cycle within The Matrix universe could have a different individual fulfilling that role.
The latest film, Resurrections, showed that the concept of ‘The One’ was actually just another way The Matrix controlled people, and a fifth movie could really explore that idea. Introducing a new ‘One’ – someone with a similar journey to Neo but a unique path – would be a compelling way to do this. Because The Matrix universe is so rich with backstory, simply playing with these established ideas would be a good enough reason to make another film.
The Matrix 5 Will Actually Be A Second Renaissance Prequel Movie

There’s a possibility that the next Matrix film isn’t a sequel at all. It could be a prequel, telling the story of the Second Renaissance. This period is explored in two parts of the animated film The Animatrix, and provides the history leading up to the events we see in the first Matrix movie.
As shown in The Animatrix, the conflict between humans and machines began in 2090 when a machine killed its owner. Though the machine was found guilty and shut down, this sparked rebellions around the world. The machines eventually created their own nation, Zero One, which quickly became the dominant power on Earth. Humans responded with a blockade, leading to a nuclear war. Desperate to cut off the machines’ energy source, humans blocked out the sun. This led the machines to capture humans and use their bodies as a source of power, a practice depicted in The Matrix.
Fans have been hoping for a live-action continuation of the Matrix story for years, and a fifth film would be amazing. It could offer a more realistic and intense experience after the events of The Matrix Resurrections.
