3 Things About Marvel 1943 That Make it More Exciting Than Wolverine’s Game

In the past ten years, many excellent Marvel games have been released, but Insomniac’s *Marvel’s Spider-Man* series remains the gold standard. Both the main *Spider-Man* games and the *Miles Morales* spin-off have been huge successes for the studio. So, it’s understandable that fans are eagerly anticipating *Marvel’s Wolverine*. While early trailers for Insomniac’s upcoming X-Men game look fantastic, another promising Marvel title is on the way: *Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra*. It could potentially be even better, and it’s definitely a game Marvel fans will want to check out.

Here are three reasons Marvel 1943 might be even better than Marvel’s Wolverine.

3) The Team Behind It

In November 2019, Skydance Media revealed they had hired Amy Hennig to launch a new video game studio, Skydance New Media. Hennig is well-known for her significant role in creating the *Uncharted* games, and she also contributed to the *Legacy of Kain* series.

While Hennig’s latest game, *Forspoken*, didn’t quite meet expectations, it’s worth noting she only developed the initial story idea for it. Now, with *Marvel 1943*, she’s returning to the roles of producer and writer – the positions where she’s had the most success.

While she’s one member of a larger team, Skydance has a strong track record of creating successful, big-budget films. Given that the *Uncharted* games are known for being action-packed summer blockbusters, Hennig’s skills seem like a great fit for the studio. At the very least, *Marvel 1943* promises to deliver exciting action and a compelling story that fans will enjoy.

2) The Heroes

Wolverine is a popular superhero and could build excitement for future X-Men games from Insomniac. But *Marvel 1943* also features a strong team, blending well-known characters with some lesser-known heroes who will get their moment in the new game.

Captain America and Black Panther are the clear highlights. However, it’s important to remember that while Steve Rogers is still the person inside the Captain America suit, this version of Black Panther is different from what most people expect.

Most people know T’Challa as the Black Panther from the Marvel movies. However, the comic book series *Marvel 1943* takes place during World War II and features Azzuri, T’Challa’s grandfather, as the Black Panther.

Details about the plot of *Marvel 1943* are scarce, but it would be interesting to see the game delve into the dynamic between Azzuri’s two sons. T’Chaka ultimately became the Black Panther, later passing the title to his son, T’Challa. However, Azzuri’s other son, N’Jobu, betrayed his family and sided with the War Dogs. While the exact timelines might not match up, the developers at Skydance could adjust them to offer glimpses into the brothers’ complex relationship.

In addition to the game’s two main characters, players will also be able to control Gabe Jones, a member of the Howling Commandos, and Nanali, the head of Wakanda’s spy network. This group of four characters will offer a wide variety of missions as they battle against Hydra.

1) The Setting

What really makes *Marvel 1943* stand out is its unique setting. While most Marvel games take place in the present day, creating a shared universe – which is great for building a connected world, particularly in games like those from Insomniac – it can also feel a bit predictable. *Marvel 1943* offers something different.

Marvel 1943 offers a unique World War II setting for players. While it would be exciting to see adaptations of stories like *Marvel 1602* or *1872* – which explore even earlier time periods – this new game should still feel original despite being part of a well-established franchise.

The game also offers a fresh take on the origins of both Captain America and Hydra, stories we’ve already seen in movies. Because it’s a game, the creators can explore this period in Marvel history in much greater detail, letting players experience a part of the universe that hasn’t been fully explored before.

If the upcoming Skydance Marvel game successfully focuses on storytelling, it likely won’t be the only game they make in the Marvel universe. We can hope future games explore lesser-known Marvel stories, like a game based on the gritty ‘Marvel Noir’ timeline or the alternate reality of the ‘House of M’ series. If ‘Marvel 1943’ is a hit, the potential for new and unique Marvel games feels limitless.
