This summer, I’m excited to find plenty of movies on Amazon Prime Video to stream – the challenge lies in picking out the ones that are truly worth watching!
As a connoisseur of all things cinematic, I’ve handpicked an intriguing selection of three often-overlooked films available on Amazon Prime Video. These gems are perfect for those seeking a blend of drama, pulse-pounding action, and unforgettable acting performances.
Enthusiasts of sports movies ought to give “Ford v Ferrari” a try, a heart-pounding racing car saga featuring an exceptional performance by Christian Bale. Meanwhile, Kieran Culkin recently won an Oscar for “A Real Pain,” but in my view, he deserved it for “Igby Goes Down,” a family dramedy that is ideal to watch during these times or at any point of the year.
‘The Brave One’ (2007)
As a lifestyle expert looking back on a harrowing experience, let me share a chilling tale from the life of a resilient woman named Erica Bain, who in reality is portrayed by the remarkable Jodie Foster. After a fateful night in New York City’s Central Park, where Erica was viciously attacked and her beloved fiancé was taken from her by three ruthless men, she found herself consumed by an overpowering mix of fear and anger.
Desperate to regain some semblance of control over her shattered existence, Erica made a decision that would forever change the course of her life: she obtained a weapon on the black market. The day came when she found herself unwittingly caught in the midst of a random convenience store robbery. In that split second of instinct and survival, she discharged her firearm, taking the life of the burglar. This singular act ignited within her an insatiable hunger for vigilante justice that swiftly spiraled out of control.
With every passing day, Erica became more fixated on tracking down the men who had taken away her peace and happiness. The question now loomed large: would Erica lose herself in the pursuit of vengeance, or could she find a way to reclaim her identity and find solace amidst the chaos?
The Brave One serves as a modern adaptation of the 1974 original Death Wish, with a significant shift towards focusing on a female protagonist, Erica. Unlike its predecessor, there’s less ambiguity surrounding Erica’s actions, which are primarily presented as justified responses rather than outright crimes. The film effectively conveys the deep sense of vengeance that Erica feels in response to the injustices she experiences.
In this movie, the conclusion seems a bit overly tidy for such a complex plot, yet any shortcomings are effectively overshadowed by Foster’s compelling portrayal of the exasperated Erica. Her acting in this film is as exceptional as it was in The Silence of the Lambs, and she displays a ferocious, aggressive side that Clarice Starling never exhibited.

‘Ford v Ferrari’ (2019)
This week, the movie titled “F1” starring Brad Pitt speeds into cinemas. If you’re looking for a similar adrenaline rush at home, give “Ford v Ferrari” a spin. The film centers around the intense competition between Henry Ford II (portrayed by Tracy Letts) and Enzo Ferrari (Remo Girone), but it predominantly focuses on the individuals behind the wheels – notably legendary racer Ken Miles (Christian Bale) and automotive designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon).
Two individuals, who typically clash like water and oil, find themselves compelled to collaborate. This unusual partnership aims to assist Ford, a U.S. automaker not particularly recognized for racing, in outperforming Ferrari, a European company renowned for producing fast, race-winning vehicles. Despite Shelby’s disdain for Ken’s overconfidence and Ken’s lack of admiration for Shelby’s obstinacy, they might possess the necessary skills to outmaneuver Ferrari and secure an unexpected victory for Ford.
As a dedicated follower of movies, I’d say that Ford v Ferrari resonates deeply as a heartwarming tale from the 1960s, revolving around an extraordinary friendship between two men who may not have shared many words. In this captivating narrative, Matt Damon delivers a commendable portrayal of the resolute Shelby, but it’s Christian Bale who truly shines as Ken – a man whose love for his family matches his passion for racing. This role stands among Bale’s finest, and it’s no surprise that he was rightly recognized with an Oscar nomination for his nuanced performance.

‘Igby Goes Down’ (2002)
The classic novel The Catcher in the Rye has never been adapted into a full-length film, but if it ever was, it could resemble the movie “Igby Goes Down“. In this film, Kieran Culkin plays the role of Igby, a teenager who frequently clashes with his affluent yet detached family. Following expulsions from multiple private schools and a military academy, he is sent to spend the summer with his godfather, D.H. Banes (portrayed by Jeff Goldblum)). However, Igby’s troubles are only starting as he develops feelings for Banes’ mistress, Rachel (Amanda Peet)), and uncovers family secrets that he wishes had remained concealed.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but notice the undisguised affection “Igby Goes Down” shows towards the literary genius of J.D. Salinger and his iconic character, Holden Caulfield. This delightful connection adds to the enjoyment of the film, allowing us a glimpse into what Holden might appreciate in cinema. The brooding, sarcastic demeanor portrayed by Macaulay Culkin beautifully encapsulates the cynical Igby, who uses his bitter outlook as a shield to avoid any genuine emotional connection.
The ensemble cast delivers an exceptional performance, particularly Susan Sarandon who portrays Igby’s estranged mother with depth and emotion, while Jeff Goldblum provides plenty of humor as Igby’s charismatic yet cunning godfather. The film effectively employs iconic New York City locations such as Central Park and the Twin Towers to create a poignant mix of humor and sadness. It is both a heartfelt romance and a somber lament for youthful idealism, which Igby learns, fades all too quickly.
