Obsidian Entertainment is a well-respected name in video games, particularly known for its role-playing games (RPGs). They’ve created some truly classic titles, including Fallout: New Vegas, often hailed as the best in the series, and the critically acclaimed CRPGs Tyranny and Pillars of Eternity. Their recent games continue their tradition of player-driven stories, now with larger budgets and improved graphics, showing how much the studio has grown since its early days.
Obsidian Entertainment has created many fantastic games, including titles like Avowed, The Outer Worlds, New Vegas, and Pillars of Eternity. But they’ve also worked on a few games that many players might not realize they were involved with, or have simply forgotten. If you’re a true Obsidian fan, you probably already know their full history – and you deserve kudos for that! But if you’re interested in discovering some of their more obscure projects, here are a few games to check out.
3. South Park: The Stick of Truth

Obsidian Entertainment frequently develops games within established universes, often creating sequels like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 and Neverwinter Nights 2. South Park: The Stick of Truth was a rare exception, as Obsidian created the first game in the series, while Ubisoft handled the sequel’s development and release. Widely considered one of the best South Park games ever made, The Stick of Truth is a funny and charming RPG that successfully captures the spirit of the show, with a touch of Obsidian’s unique style to make it truly special.
Fans of South Park will love the many references, characters, and familiar places in this game, even though it’s not very long. But even if you’re not a fan, South Park: The Stick of Truth is a fun role-playing game with enough depth in its combat and character progression to keep you hooked. Many people don’t realize Obsidian Entertainment, the game’s developer, also works for other companies, so this surprisingly accurate South Park game might have passed you by.
2. Pentiment

Released to widespread praise in 2022, Pentiment is a long-held dream of Obsidian developer Josh Sawyer. He first envisioned a game like it while studying history in the late 1990s. After finishing work on the second Pillars of Eternity game, Sawyer was finally able to bring his idea to life and begin development. Created by a small team of only 13 people, Pentiment puts players in the shoes of a traveling artist in Bavaria in the year 1518.
At its heart, Pentiment is a murder mystery where you investigate a close-knit community, question suspects, and gather clues to identify—and judge—the killer. The game adds a moral layer, letting you decide who to punish even if you’re not certain of their guilt, which fits perfectly with Obsidian’s style. It also features light RPG elements, like shaping your character’s backstory to influence the story and gameplay. Pentiment feels like a true Obsidian experience, just as strong as titles like New Vegas or Avowed, and arguably even better. It’s a bold and expansive game with beautiful art and memorable characters. If you’re searching for a fantastic, yet often overlooked, RPG, Pentiment is an excellent choice.
1. Alpha Protocol

Alpha Protocol is a spy RPG known for giving players a lot of meaningful choices. While the game feels a bit clunky and its graphics haven’t aged perfectly, its story is considered one of Obsidian Entertainment’s best. Your decisions have a real impact, changing not just individual missions, but the entire storyline. In fact, Alpha Protocol really highlights Obsidian’s strength in creating games where your choices truly matter, perhaps even more so than in titles like The Outer Worlds and Pillars of Eternity.
Unfortunately, Alpha Protocol was removed from digital stores in 2019 because the music licenses expired. It also wasn’t playable on older or current Xbox consoles for the same reason. Although it’s now back on Steam and GOG, being unavailable for several years caused many to forget about it. That’s a shame, because despite its imperfections, Alpha Protocol is still one of Obsidian Entertainment’s best and most overlooked games – it’s definitely worth playing if you enjoy spy thrillers or Obsidian’s unique storytelling and game design.
