Following the popular Naruto series, Boruto faced the challenge of proving itself as a worthy sequel. While Naruto’s story centered on a determined protagonist with a clear goal, Boruto presented a different angle – the son of a legendary Hokage who initially lacked a defined dream. This made many fans question whether a sequel could succeed. Fortunately, as the series developed, Boruto has demonstrated that it rightfully earns its place as Naruto’s successor.
Boruto’s story shares a base with Naruto’s, built on the world of ninjas, but it quickly diverges as Boruto develops his own unique goals and aspirations. This has allowed him to become a more compelling and powerful hero than his father. Here are three key reasons why Boruto surpasses Naruto as a protagonist.
3) Boruto Doesn’t Have the Obsession Naruto Had in the Original Series

A major problem with the story of Naruto Shippuden was how focused Naruto became on bringing Sasuke back to the village. It became almost unbearable to watch at times. While it demonstrated Naruto’s strong loyalty, his decisions regarding Sasuke were often illogical. Boruto, however, doesn’t get so fixated on one person. His primary motivation has always been protecting the ninja world and dealing with its dangers.
Boruto demonstrates a willingness to sacrifice himself for others, as seen in his battle with Kawaki, showing a broader sense of heroism. While Naruto is certainly heroic, his development often centered on his connection with just one friend, suggesting his foundation wasn’t quite as solid.
2) Boruto Emerged Stronger Than Naruto After the Timeskip for a Good Reason

I’m absolutely hooked on Boruto: Two Blue Vortex! It’s crazy how much stronger everyone has become – the power levels are just off the charts compared to the original Naruto. But what’s really cool is how Boruto got so strong. He really trained with Sasuke, and it shows! He didn’t just get a power-up, he truly learned from his master, even picking up the incredibly difficult Flying Raijin technique. It makes total sense that he’s surpassed Naruto, given the dedication and training he’s put in.
Boruto’s Uzuhiko, a more powerful version of the Rasengan, really showcases his talent. Unlike Naruto, who was mainly focused on rescuing Sasuke, Boruto faced a much greater and pressing danger, forcing him to become stronger. This intense pressure allowed Boruto to surpass Naruto’s power, establishing him as a central hero with a more impactful motivation for continued growth.
1) Boruto’s Story Is Shaped by Present Circumstances, Unlike Naruto’s

One reason Boruto is becoming such a likable main character is that his story focuses on what’s happening to him now, with each new story arc revealing more about who he is. Naruto’s story, on the other hand, is largely defined by the difficult things that happened to him in the past, and his choices are often based on that trauma. While a past-driven story isn’t bad, it’s become very common in action-adventure stories, meaning many heroes seem destined to repeat similar patterns.
Boruto’s story is unique because he changes and grows based on the challenges he encounters and the people he meets. When unexpectedly branded an outlaw, he becomes a rare hero forced to go on the run. However, he uses this difficult situation to mature and positively impact those around him, demonstrating that he’s not the villain everyone thinks he is. This ability to evolve in the present moment, rather than being defined by his past, might be Boruto’s greatest strength, even more so than his father, Naruto’s.
