Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is sparking interesting discussions about Godzilla and the other giant creatures, or Titans, in the Monsterverse. The show takes a more realistic approach, focusing on how people live and adapt in a world where these monsters could appear at any time. At its heart, the story follows the Randa family and their significant contributions to the history of the Monarch organization.
The first season of Monarch revealed the complex story of Hiroshi Randa, a key figure in the organization who vanished after Godzilla attacked San Francisco in 2014. A year later, his daughter, Cate, learned he had another family and, along with her half-brother Kentaro, began searching for him, trying to uncover what happened. When Hiroshi was finally found, he acted strangely, seemingly unaware that anyone had been looking for him or that he’d even gone missing. Now, Monarch has explained the reason for his behavior – and the reveal happened right at his graveside.
Hiroshi Randa Entered the Axis Mundi

In Season 2, Episode 6 of Monarch, the mystery of Hiroshi’s year-long disappearance is finally solved. We previously learned he went from San Francisco to Alaska, where the search ended at an old Monarch facility and the Randa siblings discovered a frozen titan known as a Frost Vark. While it seemed Hiroshi left Alaska after fixing the radio at the base, the truth is much stranger: he actually journeyed to another dimension.
In the Monsterverse, the Titans open pathways – called rifts – to a mysterious realm known as the Axis Mundi. Think of it as a place between our world and the Hollow Earth, where monsters live. What’s special about the Axis Mundi is that it doesn’t follow the same rules as our reality, which is why Lee could survive a massive fall – gravity works differently there.
Gravity isn’t the only unusual thing about the Axis Mundi. Time flows differently there, and this is why early attempts to create or travel through the vortices often failed. We know Lee was stuck for a few days, but when he returned, twenty years had passed on Earth. Keiko Randa experienced something even more dramatic, emerging to find her grandchildren all grown up. Hiroshi entered the Axis Mundi in Alaska and, while only a couple of days passed for him, a full year went by on Earth.
It all makes sense now – Hiroshi’s erratic behavior and even leaving his family. He thought only a couple of days had passed, so he went to Alaska believing everyone was safe, not realizing a whole year had gone by. That explains why he reacted the way he did to Cate and Kentaro; he truly didn’t know his family believed he was dead.
