Today marks the three-year anniversary of an episode that many fans consider Star Wars’ greatest achievement since the original films. While often thought of as just a movie series, Star Wars has always been a much larger franchise, expanding into comics, novels, and various products. Recently, Star Wars has found a strong home on Disney+ with a growing number of live-action and animated TV shows.
The Star Wars TV series have had a mixed reception, with some shows receiving praise and others facing criticism. For example, The Acolyte was cancelled after just one season, and The Book of Boba Fett didn’t seem to resonate with audiences. However, The Mandalorian has been a major success, even launching a new film series starring Pedro Pascal, which will bring Star Wars back to theaters next year. Despite these successes, none of the recent shows have reached the same level of popularity as the episode that premiered three years ago today.
“One Way Out” Proved How Good Andor Would Be

The first season of Tony Gilroy’s Andor launched on September 21, 2021, with three episodes released simultaneously. It quickly became apparent that this Star Wars show was unique, prioritizing character development over familiar references. While initial reactions from fans were varied—as it differed from typical Star Wars content—the acting, writing, and visual effects were all highly praised. The season truly solidified its status as a standout achievement with episode 10, “One Way Out,” which aired on November 9th.
The episode “One Way Out” is the thrilling peak of Cassian Andor’s imprisonment story on Narkina Five. As he understands the prisoners have no hope of release, it sparks a large-scale escape led by Kino Loy. The acting is phenomenal, especially Kino’s powerful speech that inspires the breakout. It’s no surprise the episode received a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with both critics and audiences completely captivated by the narrative.
Andor’s “One Way Out” Became a Symbol of the Entire Show
Many fans and critics now agree that Andor is the best Star Wars TV show ever made. It stands out from previous series as a high-quality, serious drama. Though it started with a mixed reaction, Andor quietly became a hit on Disney+, gaining a loyal audience and positive word-of-mouth. By the time the second season arrived, even those who were initially skeptical had to admit it was exceptional, setting a new standard for Star Wars storytelling not seen since the original movies ended in 1983.
“One Way Out” really captures the spirit of this achievement. A fun new tradition has started at Star Wars Celebration, where cosplayers organize impressive “prison runs” – they did one in London in 2023 and another is planned for Tokyo in 2025.

The episode concludes with a touching, yet sad, scene: Kino Loy can’t personally savor the freedom he secured for so many. While there was speculation about Andy Serkis reprising his role before season 2 of Andor, it was good that didn’t happen – bringing Kino Loy back would have diminished his powerful and fitting conclusion. Even the rumors, though, showed just how much audiences loved the character. Serkis delivered one of the most memorable performances in the history of Star Wars, and his contribution will always be celebrated.
Tony Gilroy, the creator of Andor, thinks a show like his is unlikely to be made again. He doesn’t attribute this to the show’s quality, but rather to the massive resources and creative freedom it had – something rarely seen today. With a total budget of around $650 million for both seasons, Andor is an unusually large-scale production, especially considering its focus on intimate, character-driven stories. Gilroy also had a remarkable amount of creative liberty within the Star Wars universe, as demonstrated by the unique and critically acclaimed episode, “One Way Out,” which hinted at the high quality Andor would consistently deliver.
