Ben Affleck and Matt Damon first captivated audiences with their Oscar-winning film, Good Will Hunting, and have remained a beloved Hollywood duo ever since. While they initially gained fame acting and writing together – including appearances in Kevin Smith’s Dogma – they’ve largely worked behind the scenes for years, producing films through their production companies, originally Pearl Street Films and now Artists Equity. After a long break from sharing the screen, Netflix has announced they’re reuniting for a new movie that’s already generating a lot of excitement.
Typically, a movie released in January doesn’t do well, but the trailer for Netflix’s The Rip is changing that expectation. The action-crime-thriller stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as Miami police officers who discover millions of dollars in hidden cash. They soon realize they can’t trust anyone – even their fellow officers – when so much money is involved. You can watch the full trailer below.
The Rip Trailer Brings Affleck and Damon Together Again After Years
Joe Carnahan, known for films like Smokin’ Aces and The Grey, directs The Rip, bringing Ben Affleck and Matt Damon together on screen after a three-year gap. They last appeared together in the 2023 film Air, a biographical drama about the deal between Nike and Michael Jordan, where Damon played marketing executive Sonny Vaccaro and Affleck portrayed Nike CEO Phil Knight. While Air was a successful film, Affleck and Damon didn’t share many scenes together. To see them truly sharing the screen and acting opposite each other, you have to go back five years to Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel.
Fans have been wanting to see Ben Affleck and Matt Damon work together again, and The Rip looks set to deliver. This is actually the third time they’ve appeared in a movie together this decade, which is the most frequent collaboration since their work in the 1990s. While it’s hard to say if this signals more joint projects in the future, it’s definitely a treat for their fans.
The Rip boasts an impressive cast alongside Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, featuring Teyana Taylor, Steven Yeun, Scott Adkins, Kyle Chandler, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Nestor Carbonell, and Sasha Calle (known for playing Supergirl in The Flash). Could this film be the surprise hit of 2026? We’ll find out soon – it arrives on Netflix next Friday, January 16th.
