Vince Gilligan, the creator of Breaking Bad, is known for delivering definitive endings. The show’s final season was carefully crafted in two parts to resolve every storyline. When Walter White returns to Albuquerque, New Mexico, he quickly focuses on securing his family’s future and rescuing his former partner, Jesse Pinkman, from a dangerous group. After settling all his accounts, the notorious Heisenberg dies from a gunshot wound in a fitting location: a meth lab.
At the end of El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, Jesse is able to escape his past and begin a new life after saving enough money to start over in Alaska. This leaves Saul Goodman as the last of the three central figures from Breaking Bad to face legal consequences, which happens in the finale of Better Call Saul. The series concludes with the net closing in on his alias, “Gene Takavic.” Instead of accepting a plea bargain, he chooses to take responsibility for his actions and receives an 80-year prison sentence.
Many people assume Saul Goodman would die in prison, but that’s not the ending his creator, Vince Gilligan, imagined. On The Rich Eisen Show, Gilligan discussed where his characters might be in 2025. He’s certain Walter White is still deceased, but he had a surprising update about Saul’s fate.
Gilligan joked that Trump likely pardoned him. After everyone had a laugh, he added that he believes the man is now free and even appearing in infomercials.
It makes sense that Saul found work in television – he’s always been motivated by money. However, the show’s creator also shared that he thinks Saul actually had a positive influence on at least one other character, even with all his flaws.
It Wasn’t All Fun and Games for Vince Gilligan

Following the conclusion of the Saul Goodman storyline, creator Vince Gilligan focused on Kim Wexler, Saul’s ex-partner and love interest. Like many well-intentioned characters, Kim gets caught up in Saul’s plans, ultimately leading her to start over with a new life in Florida. Gilligan believes Florida offers Kim a positive path forward, envisioning her working as a public defender and using her talents to help others.
While Gilligan’s statements are encouraging, there aren’t currently any plans for another season of Better Call Saul. Still, it’s good to hear that if the show did return, the actors would likely have a positive experience.
As a huge fan of Vince Gilligan’s work, I’m really curious to hear what everyone thinks about where he sees his characters going! I’d love to chat about it – head over to the ComicBook Forum and let’s discuss!
