20 years after IDW’s “30 Days of Night” introduced readers to the eerie horror of Barrow, Alaska, a place so remote its sun sets for 30 days, plunging the town and inhabitants into unending darkness. Misfortune often lurks in the dark, and this year, vampires have returned to exploit the situation, feasting on the terrified residents. However, the people of Barrow are no longer defenseless, as they have managed to regain control of their town over the last two decades. Regrettably, the tranquility is short-lived, for the nightmare is about to resurface once more. Beginning October 25th, writer Rodney Barnes and artist Chris Shehan are returning readers to Barrow with “30 Days of Night: Falling Sun,” a vengeful tale of vampires seeking revenge. ComicBook has obtained an early review of the debut issue of this new series, and it promises to be a thrilling, gory story that lives up to the original horror classic’s legacy.
30 Days of Night: Falling Sun #1 Introduces Jalen James, a teenager from LA, seeking refuge with his Uncle Calvin in Barrow due to gang violence. His arrival is met with a stark contrast as he adapts to the chilly city.
In Barrow, residents still remember the terror of a vampire attack that occurred 20 years ago, and they take extensive precautions during the upcoming thirty days of darkness. These precautions have become routine for some residents, while others dismiss them as mere stories, unaware or indifferent to their significance.
However, this lack of understanding among the populace may pose a problem, as it becomes evident in the narrative. Meanwhile, far away in Romania, surviving vampires recall the fallen leader, Vicente, and are plotting revenge against Barrow.
In essence, while the people of Barrow continue their preparations oblivious to the danger lurking, the vampires remember and seek retribution.
As a devoted admirer of the original “30 Days of Night,” stepping back into the bone-chilling darkness could feel like an arduous endeavor, but fear not! You’re in capable hands with Barnes at the helm. Barnes has demonstrated his prowess in the realm of horror, particularly vampire horror, through his successful series “Killadelphia.” This skill and masterful storytelling are on full display here. One of Barnes’s exceptional talents lies in his ability to weave tension from the start, making readers feel the looming dread yet eager for more revelations. This knack is evident throughout this first issue as Barnes deftly introduces various characters while only offering glimpses into their larger narratives. The vampire lore is also skillfully incorporated, with the storyline extending beyond Barrow to a chilling ritual in Romania, hinting at a brutal conflict that might prove insurmountable for humanity. This captivating interplay between character development and haunting lore propels the issue forward, leaving readers on the very edge of comfort as the final page unfolds.
Although Barnes’ writing is already exceptional, Shehan’s artwork takes it to another level. Shehan’s work is consistently intricate and adorned with details – readers of The Autumnal can attest that Shehan has a knack for making the grotesque alluring – and this is true here as well. The combination of Shehan’s artistry and Xenon Honchar’s colors creates an authentic, icy landscape in Barrow that somehow evokes both the freshness of a new beginning and the subtle undercurrent of darkness. This art gives the town a feel reminiscent of True Detective: Night Country, which fits perfectly in this context. The artwork on Romania is equally impressive, layered with detailed elements that become increasingly unsettling as you examine them. Even the journey from Romania to Barrow is a visual tour de force, even though it’s some of the darkest horror depicted in the issue.
Reading “30 Days of Night: Falling Sun” #1 after 20 years feels like revisiting an old friend, but in a complex way. This comic does an outstanding job of portraying the intricate balance between peace and impending chaos, just before darkness sets in and chaos erupts once more. It also subtly showcases the creepier horror that comes with the complacency that time brings, all while Barnes’ writing skillfully guides us through this emotional rollercoaster. The artwork by Shehan is both beautiful and gruesome, making it an enticing and unsettling descent into a terrifying nightmare that readers will crave more of.
Rating: 5 out of 5
