30 Years Ago Today, The Weirdest Power Rangers Series Ended (And It’s Been Basically Buried Since)

Today marks the 30th anniversary of a particularly unusual chapter in the history of Power Rangers, a season that’s largely been forgotten over the years. While Power Rangers has always evolved with new teams and powers, and fans are accustomed to big changes between seasons—including new actors and storylines—this first major reinvention remains a controversial one, even now.

Even after 30 years and numerous teams, Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers remains the most unique season of the Power Rangers franchise. This short story arc introduced an entirely new team of Rangers, but only had ten episodes to develop their characters. When it concluded on February 17, 1996, the Alien Rangers largely faded from the rest of the series, with their story and characters rarely referenced or revisited.

Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers Ended 30 Years Ago Today

The Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers season was a really unique and experimental part of the Power Rangers series. It happened near the end of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers run and gave fans their first look at the big changes the show would start making. While the first three seasons had some shifts due to the source material they used, Alien Rangers was a much bigger change – almost like a preview of completely new Power Rangers shows to come. It served as a way to move the series in a new direction.

The series Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers begins with the last episodes of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 3, where the original Power Rangers are unexpectedly transformed into children. With Earth vulnerable, a new team of Rangers arrives from the planet Aquitar to assist Zordon. While the idea of Rangers existing on other planets was exciting, the show struggled because many episodes focused on the challenges of the Rangers being children.

This short miniseries served two purposes: it prepared viewers for the major changes coming in Power Rangers Zeo, and it gently introduced the idea that the Power Rangers series would continue to develop. With only ten episodes, the Alien Rangers didn’t have much chance to develop strong relationships or individual personalities. The show had to move quickly, balancing the new team’s story with the ongoing quest of the original Rangers to find the Zeo Crystals.

What Happened to the Alien Rangers?

The short series borrowed elements from Ninja Sentai Kakuranger, which created a funny contradiction: the characters were aliens who needed water to live, yet they were also ninjas fighting in giant robots based on Japanese history. This confusing mix of ideas didn’t help the show establish a clear identity, and the storyline was wrapped up in just ten episodes. Over time, the series has largely been overlooked and forgotten.

The Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers series did wrap up its story with the villain Hydro Hog, and the team eventually left Earth when the original Power Rangers returned to their adult forms. It’s often overlooked by fans revisiting the franchise, and understandably so. The episodes feel like filler, clearly created to keep the show on air for a few more months. This was especially noticeable in the storylines focused on the younger characters.

The search for the Zeo Crystals involved some odd decisions. The storyline used each character’s background to jump to different time periods, but these choices haven’t held up well over time. This is likely why Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers isn’t very popular compared to other seasons, and its team isn’t particularly memorable. It’s disappointing, because the idea of aliens fighting evil could have been developed much further and become a larger part of the Power Rangers universe.
