30 Years Later, Jumanji Fans Are Finally Getting the Sequel They Always Wanted

Joe Johnston’s 1995 film Jumanji, starring Robin Williams and based on the book by Chris Van Allsburg, became a huge hit worldwide. The movie earned over $260 million (more than $550 million adjusted for inflation) and led to both an animated TV series and a real-life board game that many fans wished would magically come to life. For many years, Jumanji stood alone, though Zathura served as a similar adventure in 2005. Then, in 2017, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle reimagined the story by placing the characters inside the game itself.

The film, featuring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan, became a huge hit, earning over $960 million worldwide and leading to the 2019 sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level. While the second film didn’t quite reach the heights of the first (though it still grossed over $800 million), excitement is building again. A sneak peek at the fourth Jumanji movie has arrived, confirming that fans are finally getting the sequel they’ve been waiting for.

Jumanji 4 Finally Brings the Game Back to the Real World

As a huge fan of the Jumanji franchise, I was thrilled to see Sony Pictures drop the first photo from the new movie! It’s been thirty years since the original, and it looks like they’re finally bringing the game back into our world – something the recent sequels haven’t really done. Those last few movies were great, but they focused on us inside the game, while the original and the book were all about the game’s chaos spilling into reality. Remember how Jumanji: The Next Level hinted the game was being fixed and the jungle would start appearing in the real world? Well, it looks like that promise is finally being kept! It’s exciting to see them revisit that classic premise, and I can’t wait to see how they bring the chaos back home.

The image shows Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan as their characters from the first two Jumanji movies, now appearing in the real world on a city street. In the previous films, these characters served as avatars for the teenage players inside the game, and their personalities were played for laughs. Now that they’re in the real world, it’s uncertain how their personalities will change, especially as they encounter the people who originally played them in the story. For example, Dwayne Johnson plays the confident adventurer Dr. Xander Bravestone, who was controlled by the anxious Spencer in the films. It’s likely we’ll see Bravestone and Spencer interacting in the new movie, but how that will play out is still a mystery.

To build excitement, Johnson shared a video from the movie set, showcasing a cool connection to the original film. He revealed that his character will be wearing the same dice as a necklace that appeared in the first movie – a neat Easter egg for fans!

Dwayne Johnson shared his excitement about filming in Los Angeles again, saying it’s been a long time since he shot a movie there. He was happy to bring a production back to the city, allowing the crew to be home with their families. He also revealed a tribute to Robin Williams in the new Jumanji film – the original dice from the first movie – as a way to honor Williams and the legacy he started with the franchise, as they film what will be the final Jumanji movie.

I’m so excited for the next Jumanji movie! It’s coming out at Christmas 2026, and from the first picture I’ve seen, it looks like it’s continuing right where the last one left off. It seems like we’re in for another Christmas adventure with the gang!
