Get ready to stream one of the most memorable action movies from the ’90s – for free! The 1990s were a fantastic time for action films. Classics like Leon: The Professional, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Total Recall, Speed, Blade, The Rock, Rush Hour, and The Matrix really defined the era. But, alongside those blockbusters, there were some incredible cult favorites. This film, directed by Robert Rodriguez – known for his Grindhouse style – boasts a great cast and over-the-top action. We’re talking about Desperado, the second film in Rodriguez’s Mexico Trilogy, and you’ll soon be able to watch it without paying a dime.
Robert Rodriguez’s Desperado is coming to Tubi soon, bringing plenty of action! The free streaming service will start offering the film on October 1st. It arrived in 1995, following the success of Rodriguez’s first popular movie, El Mariachi (released in 1992), and was later followed by the classic Once Upon a Time in Mexico in 2003. Desperado brings back Antonio Banderas as El Mariachi, continuing his journey for revenge as he confronts a notorious drug lord in Mexico. Here’s what the movie is about, according to the official description:
The Mariachi, played by Antonio Banderas, gets deeply involved in the dangerous world of the border when he hunts for Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida), one of the last powerful Mexican drug lords. This leads to a thrilling and violent confrontation. Assisted by his close friend (Steve Buscemi) and a captivating bookstore owner (Salma Hayek), the Mariachi pursues Bucho, battles his ruthless gang, and leaves a bloody path in his wake.
Desperado was a hit with audiences and critics when it opened in 1995. Thanks to a mix of original and contemporary reviews, it holds a decent 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Although audiences definitely enjoyed the hyper-violent action film even more, as it boasts a 79% audience rating. Produced for just $7 million, Desperado grossed just over $25 million. While it’s far from a major blockbuster, the film has since gained cult status thanks to the now-defunct video store rentals, DVD sales, and, now, streaming. 30 years after it was released, audiences are still embracing the cult action classic. Some of the user reviews from Rotten Tomatoes have labeled the film as a “timeless masterpiece,” “Robert Rodriguez’s best movie,” and “a non-stop, action-packed classic.”
The Mexico Trilogy Is an Action-Packed Classic

Columbia Pictures
It’s hard not to enjoy the Mexico trilogy! El Mariachi first showed audiences the talents of Robert Rodriguez, who created a fast-paced action movie with very little money. In fact, El Mariachi was famously made for only $7,000. Carlos Gallardo played the main character in the first film, before Antonio Banderas took on the role for the remaining movies in the trilogy.
Deciding which film is best in this trilogy really comes down to personal preference. Some people love the raw, low-budget style of El Mariachi, while others prefer the bigger scale and higher production values of Desperado. And then there’s Once Upon a Time in Mexico, which brings the trilogy to a thrilling end (and includes what many consider to be one of the most iconic guns ever shown on screen).
